Citizen Aquifer Map
OUTPUT
● Aquifer Map
● Water Balance
● Scenarios
OUTCOME
● Water Literate Citizenry – citizen monitored map
● Ownership of data
● Identify and facilitate sharing and adoption of Best Practices
● Not just Yamalur Watershed
● Engagement with governance
Actors
● RWAs/Citizen Groups● Schools● Businesses● Service Providers – Water Quality Test labs,
Camera Inspections, Borewell diggers, Tanker operators, Well diggers
● Government Institutions/Researchers – KSPCB, CGWB, DMG, ATREE, IISc, BWSSB, GSI ...
Mechanisms
● Sharing of existing data with/from citizens – eg. Borewell logs, Camera inspection reports
● Interviews, Questionnaires● Tests on site – SWL, Yield tests, Water Quality
tests● Automated instrumentation : Weather Station,
Automated Water Level Sensor● Communicate through
● Events● Facebook, YouTube, ... Social Media
Data About
● Borewells/Open Wells● Lakes● Land Use● Rainfall ● Rainwater Harvesting – Storage and Recharge● Water Demand● STPs and waste water reuse
Borewell/Open Well Data - Static
● When was borewell/open well dug ?● Depth of casing● Level at which water was struck● When did it go dry ?
Camera Inspection Report/Borewell Logs
● DETAILS OF BOREWELL
● Dia of Borewell : 6½” inch.
● Depth of casing : 60 ft.
● Depth of Borewell : 770 ft.
● Static Water Level : 400 ft.
● CAMERA INSPECTION REPORT
● Camera Inspection was conducted on : 24.11.2014
● Horizontal Fractures was encountered : 135,268,326,387,430,463,527,536,580,590, 600,611,620,625,643,710,727,730.
● Recommendation: Suitable for Hydro-Fracturing
What we found
● Nobody seems to acknowledge the presence of Open Wells – at least 14 Open wells in the Watershed !!
● Very difficult to get data on Open Wells – nobody knows/remembers
● Borewell logs not asked for – not maintained
● Service providers reluctant to share data. In some cases do not maintain data
● Borewell Farms
Open Wells/Bore Wells - dynamic
Collected 4 times in a year● Static Water Level● Discharge per hour● Total extraction in a day● Water Quality
What we found
● Difficult to find ideal conditions for testing – borewells not pumped for 24 hours
● Neighbouring borewells are always pumping● Varying yields● Great interest to understand what it all means● Problems with Instrumentation – water level
sensor breaks down easily/gets stuck in borewell/ faulty beeps
● STP water output reports available easily
What we found
● Well diggers very keen to contribute data● Places where hard rock is found● Recharge Wells that yield water
Data – Water Demand and STPs
● Water Balance for the MicroWatershed● Rain (stored and recharged)● Groundwater extraction● Treated waste water for reuse● Domestic/Industrial/ Small shops demand● Generated waste water
