SUSTAINABILITY: AN OVERVIEW

SUSTAINABILITY: THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY

SUSTAINABILITY: THE UK LIGHTING INDUSTRY

They seek it here,They seek it there ...

Yesterday, upon the stair,I met a man who wasn't there. He wasn't there again today,I wish, I wish he'd go away...

“Sustainable development meets the needs of the present

without compromising the ability of future generations

to meet their own needs”

The Brundtland Commission: World Commission on Environment and Development1987

But What Does It Mean In Practice?

RAY ANDERSON came up with the idea of climbing MOUNT SUSTAINABILITY as a description for what

this adventure would be like

Ray Anderson (1934 – 2011): founder of Interface Inc.

Climbing Mount Sustainability

At the moment, most of us are here, WANDERING around in the foothills

Low energy outputs (products)

Recycled materials / waste reduction

Response to global problem

Ends justify any means

Growing awareness of resource limits

Escalating costs of raw materials

Climbing Mount Sustainability

And a few have already got the hint that there’s SOMETHING a bit bigger going on

Low energy outputs (products)

Recycled materials / waste reduction

The Company

Response to global problem

Growing awareness of resource limits

Escalating costs of raw materials

Grow awareness amongst staff

Trained staff make efficient industry

Climbing Mount Sustainability

The sea-change starts in the COMPANY, with senior management

Fair and transparent competitive practices

A robust marketplace exposes ‘greenwash’ practices

Then the Company reaches out to meet those CUSTOMERS demanding change

Outreach into the local area, based on company experience

Awareness moves out from the company into the home

Climbing Mount Sustainability

And before we knows what’s happened, there’s an entire COMMUNITY on board

YES - But What Does It Mean In Practice?

‘Organisations around the world, and their stakeholders, are becoming increasingly aware of the need for and benefits of socially responsible behaviour.

The objective of social responsibility is to contribute to sustainable development.’

‘ISO:26000 is being, and should be taken, seriously. It is a powerful statement of the moral and practical issues facing companies and other organisations.

Dame Ellen MacArthur and The Circular Economy

The Circular Economy is not a new idea

– its where it all started

The World Economic Forum, Davos: 2014

Several chief executives in Davos were keen to show that

THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY is not about corporate social responsibility.

McKinsey managing director Dominic Barton says "We have to demonstrate

this is a win win, that you can make money

and help use resources more sustainably," he said.

"This is not CSR or a sideshow, but is fundamental.

SO: for now,

SUSTAINABILITY = THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY

But does any of this matter?

Recent research commissioned by The Chartered

Institute of Marketing indicates that more than

75% of marketers believe that a company’s

sustainability practices will increasingly affect

customers buying decisions.

Chartered Institute of Marketing: ‘Shape the Agenda’ 2007

What is the UK construction industry

response to all of this?

Let’s talk: SUPPLY CHAIN

… specifying sustainability measures during the building’s design and procurement stage

can result in cost savings over the operational life of the building for little or no additional upfront cost.

But where is the UK lighting industry in all of this?

Houston – we have a problem

ITS COMPLEX . . .

and that’s THE problem

What are the major Sustainability issues

for the UK lighting industry as we move into

an LED operating environment?

Some interesting data is presented (Fouquet and Pearson, 2006) which shows how the huge improvements in the lighting efficiency and the cost of lighting have driven demand ever higher, which of course raises the issue as to what

happens as very efficient LED lighting becomes widely available. BLOG by David Hone: Climate Change advisor for Shell

So what happens next?

What can we do?

We can get involved

and

start asking some questions.

Environmental Product Declarations

and

Life Cycle Assessments

To meet the ambitions of our clients and project partners,

the minimum that we

should require from manufacturers

are Life Cycle Assessments of their products.
