This presentation discusses:

Philanthropic giving in the African-American community

Why establish a Nonprofit Organization?

What is a Nonprofit Organization?

How STC Consulting helps NPOs start right

African-American Philanthropy

Philanthropic giving in the African-American community is not new

For 200+ years, African-Americans have donated their time and financial resources to groups and causes that promote the welfare of others

Examples include fraternities, sororities, social fellowships, Masonic organizations, churches and community caring

3 Patterns of African-American Philanthropy

Humanitarian aid: Designed to ameliorate individual & community hardship

Institutional development or self-help: Establishment of churches, schools, and commercial enterprises for black communities

Movements for social change: “From the abolition of slavery to the elimination of all legal, educational, and economic barriers to racial equality.”

(Source: Dr. Emmet Carson, CEO, Silicon Valley Community Foundation)

Current African-American Giving

A 2012 W.K. Kellogg Foundation study found:

2/3 of African-American households donate to organizations & causes totaling $11 billion yearly

African-Americans give away 25% more of their income per year than white Americans

(Source: Cultures of Giving: Energizing & Expanding Philanthropy by and for Communities of Color)

Increasing access to wealth by African-Americans presents the opportunity to “give back” to local & global communities both socially & economically through NPOs

Establishing successful NPOs that are properly organized & managed is a proven way to grow & equip the African-American community for the future
