5 Ways to Reduce (or Eliminate)

Back Pain

The two most common causes of back pain in older adults are osteoarthritis

and spinal stenosis.

Osteoarthritis is a gradual

breakdown of the cartilage between the facet joints of

the spine.

Spinal stenosis occurs when the spinal nerves in the lower back are choked, which leads to

leg pain.

The symptoms for these and other causes of back pain may vary slightly, but all who

experience back pain wish it would just go away.

There are several methods

sufferers can use to help

control their back pain, or

even get rid of it

permanently.

1. Change what you eat

Studies suggest that eating certain foods can help reduce inflammation that contributes to back pain

You should eat more:• Cherries • Olive oil• Salmon, sardines, mackerel,

albacore tuna—all sources of omega-3 fatty acids

• Vegetable protein (such as soy)

• Vegetables and fruits of every hue

• Nuts of all kinds

• Ginger• Green tea• Alfalfa (sprouts, juice, or

supplement capsules)• Chamomile• Fenugreek (leaves, seeds,

or sprouts)• Flax (seeds or oil)• Rosemary• Sage• Shitake mushroom

Choosing what you eat more carefully can make a difference

in your pain levels.

2. Rest

Most of us lead busy lives and don't want to stop to let our bodies heal.

However, completely resting for several days allows the nerves to start to heal.

If you take too long resting, though, your back muscles will weaken and then have

more trouble supporting your spine.

3. Regular ice treatment

Ice not only feels good, but it also constricts blood vessels and helps

prevent swelling.

Generally ice is applied for the first 48 hours to limit further inflammation.

Back pain is often exacerbated as the muscles of the back become knotted or

begin to spasm.

4. Exercise and Manipulation

Almost all back pain treatment plans include some type of exercises.

Each person's treatment plan will be different, so it is important that you see a physical therapist or

chiropractor to find out which exercises will help, not hurt you.

Even if you hurt, studies have shown that people who exercise and stay flexible are able to handle pain better than those who don't.

Physicians trained in the Chiropractic BioPhysics method

offers a combination of chiropractic and physical therapy procedures that specifically help

with back pain.
