visits with Grayson Clamp at

Grayson Clamp is one of the first children in the United States to receive an Auditory Brainstem Implant as part of an FDA-approved investigational device trial.

In June 2013, Graysonheard his father’s voice

for the first time.

The world cheered him on.

The auditory brain stem implant was a delicate surgery that required the work of a Head & Neck surgeon and a Neurosurgeon.

Grayson had two of UNC’s best –Drs. Craig Buchman and Matthew Ewend.

CBS Evening News checks in on Grayson six months after receiving the device.

CBS Evening News’ Chief Medical Correspondent Dr. LaPook watches Grayson’s progress.

Dr. Buchman sits down with Dr. LaPook to discuss the road ahead for Grayson.

Grayson returns to Chapel Hill about twice a month for therapy and once every three months for device checks and hearing tests.

Nicole Clamp and Dina King, a cued speech transliterator, watch as audiologist Jennifer Woodard works with Grayson.

During this visit, the speech processoris programmed to ensure that the implanted part of the device works properly.

Nicole Clamp describes how Grayson’s surgery has changed his life.

It’s playtime for Grayson and Dr. LaPook.

Grayson is beginningto understand that

sound is meaningful. He is pairing sound

with visual informationand using it for

communication.

He is also beginning to understand phrases

and words.
