What causes fractures?

• Excessive force applied to your bone

causes it to break or shatter.

Three types of bone fracture

• Comminuted fractures

• Greenstick fractures

• Spiral fractures

1.Comminuted fractures 

• Bone fragment into

three or more pieces

2. Greenstick fractures 

• Bone breaks incompletely, much a green in the way twig breaks. Only one side of the shaft breaks; the other side bends

3. Spiral fractures 

• Ragged break occurs when excessive twisting forces are applied to a bone.

Fracture treatment and repair

1. Treatment

• Reduction:

1. Realignment of broken bone ends

2. Closed reduction- physician manipulates to correct position

3. Open reduction- surgical pins or wires secure ends

Treatment

• Immobilization by cast or traction for healing

• Depends on break severity, bone broken, and age of patient

Stage of bone repair: hematoma form

• Torn blood vessels hemorrhage

• Clot ( hematoma) forms

• Site swollen painful, and inflamed
