WHAT IS

OZONE ?

• A chemical compound consisting of three oxygen atoms (O3).

• The elemental form of oxygen occurring naturally as a result of ultraviolet energy or lightning causing a temporary recombination of oxygen atoms into groups of three.

• The form of oxygen that is formed by an electric discharge field of a corona discharge generator (simulates lightning).

• Oxygen is the only gas that can accept and carry an

electrical charge. Remember, the terminal electron acceptor.

DOSE AND LANGUAGE USE FOR OZONE THERAPY IN DENTISTRY

• EXPRESSED AS MICROGRAMS PER MILLILITERS OF OXYGEN (mcg/ml)

• ALSO EXPRESSED AS “GAMMA”• INTERNAL USE RANGE: 6 - 30µg/ml (dependent on

application)

• EXTERNAL USE RANGE: 40- 50µg/ml (root canal therapy & caries)

• **START with a LOW dose and GO SLOW***

What Treatment Regimens willEffectively Eliminate:

• BACTERIA

• VIRUSES

• FUNGI

• PARASITES

1. Bacteria 2. Ozone contacts cell membrane 3. Ozone (peroxides) penetrates cell membrane 4. Rupture of cell membrane begins 5. Membrane loses integrity 6. Bacteria lyses due to ozone

The cover story in “THE JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN DENTAL ASSOCIATION,” Vol 140, No 8 978-986 is “Periodontitis: An Archetypical Biofilm Disease” It states that “Periodontitis is a classic example of biofilm-mediated diseases.” The article concluded that, “Periodontitis, like other biofilm infections, is refractory to antibiotic agents and host defenses because the causative microbes live in complex communities that persist despite challenges that range from targeted antibiotic agents to phagocytosis.” The clinical implications concluded that “The regular delivery of non targeted anti-biofilm agents may be an effective strategy for treating biofilms, especially if these agents include oxidative agents that dissolve the biofilm matrix.”

History of Ozone

CHRISTIAN FREDRICH SCHONBEIN DISCOVERED OZONE IN 1840

• 1881- John Harvey Kellogg, MD, from Battle Creek, MI used ozone to treat diptheria.

• 1896- Nikola Tesla patented first O3 generator and sold them to doctors for medical use.

• 1898- Benedict Lust, MD, New York- Founder of Naturopathy, wrote about ozone therapy.

1885 Florida Medical AssociationPublished: Ozone

• Written by Charles J. Kenworthy M.D. • Practicing medicine in Jacksonville, Florida. • Proved that ozone was in regular medical usage

in the United States before 1885. • Therefore, it predates the 1906 Pure Food and

Drug Act and the FDA. • Ozone for medical usage is grandfathered in the

United States, and held perfectly legal for use without censure.

Ozone History in Dentistry

• 1932 - E.A. Fisch, a dentist uses ozonated water in dental procedures and pioneered its use in medicine. (1932-1998 rise and fall of antibiotics)

• 1998 - Edward Lynch publishes a series of articles investigating the efficacy of ozone on dental infection.

• 1998 – Mollica, Harris first introduced to oxygen/ozone therapy in dentistry to United States

• 2000 – Harris delivers first comprehensive oxygen/ozone lecture at Capital University of Integrative Medicine.

• 2000 – Oxygen/Ozone becomes curriculum based at CUIM. • 2000 – Oxygen/Ozone Therapy in Dentistry introduced in the

clinical setting at National Integrative Health Associates – CUIM clinic

• 2002 – Mollica, Harris Oxygen-Ozone Therapy “Applications in Biologic Dentistry”. Presented at first continuing education on oxygen/ozone in dentistry

• 2004 – Edward Lynch – chief editor – Ozone: The Revolution in Dentistry

• 2007 – Mollica, Harris Cyto-Immunologic Nutritional Supportive Therapies for Oxygen/Ozone Therapy

• 2008 – International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology accepts Oxygen/Ozone Therapy in Dentistry as scientifically valid.

• 2008 – IAOMT scientifically validates endodontic therapy with oxygen/ozone (G. Cole)

• 2009 – IAOMT publishes Oxygen/Ozone in Dentistry • 2009 – Academy of General Dentistry introduces

subject code 162 – Ozone Therapy

THE SCIENCE

OF OZONE THERAPY

CORONADISCHARGE

Properties of Ozone

In Vitro (Ex Vivo) Powerful Oxidizer–Kills bacteria, fungi and viruses at lower concentrations than chlorine (1 molecule of ozone = 3,000 to 10,000 molecules of chlorine) AND kills 3500 times faster than chlorine.

●Also oxidizes phenolics (poisonous compounds of methanol and benzene), pesticides, detergents, chemical manufacturing wastes and aromatic compounds more rapidly and effectively than chlorine, yet WITHOUT chlorine’s harmful residues (Trihalomethanes, etc.).

Important Aspect to Consider *AGAIN*

Oxygen/Ozone can accept AND

Carry an electrical charge

Biofilm, Bacteria, Virus, Fungi, Parasites, Infection and

Inflammation all are positively charged

–Ozonated Water: Ozone gas is bubbled through water, creating a solution that has a shelf life of 10 hours at room temperature and 5 days in the refrigerator. Ozonated water is used to treat:

• Wounds• Burns• Intestinal problems• Slow healing skin infections• Gynecological Infections• Also used for colonics• and enemas

– Ozonated Oil (primarily olive oil): Ozone is bubbled through oil until it forms a salve/balm type consistency. This is used to treat:

• Skin conditions, infections with bacteria, fungi and viruses.• Hemorrhoids• Vulvovaginitis• Insect bites/bee stings• Gingivitis• Placed on capsules and ingested to treat ulcers, gastritis and

giradiasis

IF symptoms fail to resolve

THEN consider ozone treatment due to the probability of an

infection/inflammation in the joint(s) or chronic inflammation of

ligaments, tendons, muscles or ganglia

TRIOZONIDE OF TRIOLEIN

NOT AN OXIDANT

OXIDATION OF OLIVE OIL SO WHAT’S THE POINT?

– Inhalation of Ozonides: An ozone/oxygen mixture is bubbled through olive oil and gaseous compounds are created that are a species of triozonides of triolein (C10H18O3) that are safe to inhale. These triozonides decompose at the aqueous level of the lung alveolus. The thereby create oxidative peroxides that are used to treat:

17 patients received 15 sessions of rectal ozone plus ozonized oil

drops for chronic suppurative O.M. 16 tested negative at the end of

two cycles, and 14 improved their hearing loss. Mastoid x-ray

improvement noted in 13. Another study remarked on the

improvement noted using O2/O3 irrigations of the TM.

This is the preferred therapy for recurrent otitis media as opposed to repeated and

prolonged use of antibiotics.

• Abstract

• Methods of clinical application of gaseous ozone and ozonated solutions are described

with special reference to the treatment of patients with acute and chronic suppurative

middle ear diseases. Results of otoscopy, microbiological and cytological studies confirm

therapeutic efficiency of the above techniques as accelerating recovery of patients with

this pathology. It is recommended to include ozonotherapy as an additional method in

the combined treatment of acute and chronic suppurative otitis media.

Vestn Otorinolaringol. 1999;(2):48-9. [Reasons for the application of medical ozone in the treatment of chronic purulent mesotympanitis]. [Article in Russian] Shakov VIu, Edeleva AN. Abstract Ozone-oxygen mixture (ozone concentration 600 microg/l) was used in irrigations of the tympanic cavity in 52 patients with chronic purulent mesotympanitis (CPM). The course of the treatment consisted of 5-7 procedures. 18 CPM controls received standard treatment without the irrigations. The course of the ozone-oxygen irrigations produced good results: ear discharge and tympanic mucosa inflammation stopped in 81% of the irrigated patients, levels of myeloperoxidase which marks inflammation reduced significantly, bactericidal effects of the mixture were observed for all the detected pathogens, antibiotic sensitivity of the bacteria rose. Fast antiinflammatory result of ozone therapy was due not only to its bactericidal effect but also via its antihypoxic and immunomodulating mechanisms
