What is Video Game Addiction?

• Addiction is defined as “A primary, chronic disease, characterized by impaired control over the use of a psychoactive substance and/or behavior.”

• People who play games compulsively and avoid other responsibilities are video game addicts.

What is Video Game Addiction(Cont’d)

• Video game addiction is not an addiction that is recognized in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.

• It shares many of the symptoms of other addictions and is a rising concern.

Symptoms of Video Game Addicts

• Most non-school hours are spent on the computer or playing video games

• Falling asleep in school• Falling behind with assignments• Worsening grades• Lying about computer or video game use• Choosing to use the computer or play video

games, rather than see friends

Physical Symptoms That May Point To Addiction

• Carpal tunnel syndrome• Sleep disturbances• Backaches or neck aches• Headaches• Dry eyes• Failure to eat regularly or neglecting personal

hygiene
