Statistics of Diabetes

26 Million Americans have diabetes.

7 Million are unaware

29 Million have “Pre diabetes”

Since 1997, the number of people with diabetes has risen from 5 to 8+ percent.

Thesis

Taking a look at what actually causes Type 2 Diabetes, a simple change in lifestyle and dieting choices can effectively reduce the severity or even cause remission of the disease.

Warning Signs are Mostly Internal

There are quite a lot of symptoms or warning signs, but most are internal.

Gaining weight is one of the few outwardly physical signs.

Internally, blood sugar levels rise into diabetic levels because of the insulin resistance.

A1C Test

The A1C test is a test designed to measure the amount of glycated hemoglobin. This hemoglobin is used to figure out the average plasma gluclose concentration.

This test is used as a way to measure progress when on a diabetes treatment plan.

A result of 4.5-6% is average and means you are not diabetic.

A result of 6.5+% on two separate tests means you have diabetes.

MedicationsMedications are formulated to regulate blood sugar levels from day one.

Combining two or more medications can actually reverse the effect

Insulin injections have shown higher complication risks

Medications affect everyone different, talk to GP(general practitioner) about risks.

How does exercise affect diabetes?

Combining aerobic and resistance exercises can significantly can lower the A1C levels by 1%.

An A1C test can show blood/glucose levels from the past 2-3 months.

That 1% drop can reduce the risk for cardiovascular disease by 20%, and the risk for eye or kidney disease by 40%.

If you can’t make it to the gym; improvise. Take the stairs, pace while on the phone, or deliver a message instead of e-mail.

Interval Training

Taking 30 minutes to alternate intensity can be extremely beneficial.

As little as 10 minutes of interval training can lower glucose levels by 13% for up to 24 hours.

90 minutes of moderate intensity exercise per week is recommended.

Home Remedies?Diabetics should “try to eat foods that are low in fat, salt, and sugar and high in fiber such as beans, fruits and vegetables, and grains”("Do Your ... Blood Sugar Today").

Simple changes in diet and lifestyle go a long way in recovery

At least 60 minutes of exercise, and limited sugary drinks and foods.

Alcohol and DiabetesAlcohol has been shown to reverse the effectiveness of hypoglycemic medications. Take caution when consuming alcohol in combination with these medications. Alcohol affects all three of the glucose sources, and the hormones needed to control blood glucose levels.

Impairs the body’s attempt to return blood sugar levels to normal.

Manageable but Deadly

Managing Type 2 Diabetes is completely dependent on the patient

Easily managed with dieting and exercise

Called “adult onset” diabetes but can affect any age group
