The Intersection of the Eye and Technology

[X] Marks the Spot...

In July 2014, Novartis and Google announced collaboration...

Alcon focus is to address unmet medical needs for patients in eye care... by potentially applying “smart lens” technology

• 20 million blind from treatable cataracts1

• 25 million with AMD2

• 67 million with glaucoma3

• 1.7 billion people with presbyopia4

• 90% of problems can be prevented, treated or cured1,5,6

Novartis Interest in the Google “Smart Lens”

Technology Currently Focused in Two Areas

Helping diabetic patients manage their disease by providing a continuous, minimally invasive measurement of the

body’s glucose levels via a “smart

contact lens”

For people living with presbyopia who can no longer read without glasses, the

“smart lens” has the potential to help restore the eye’s natural focusing

ability on near objects

1. Ophthalmic Biosensing 2. Functional Improvement

Alcon-Google Collaboration Can Transform Eye Care

• “10x mindset” and passion

• Ultra-fast prototyping

• Miniaturization excellence

Upcoming Biosensor Challenges

• Patient Privacy– Despite the many advantages (ease of use, sharing data with HCPs,

potential for analytics, etc.), some patients may not be comfortable with personal health data being stored on cloud-based systems

– Additionally, concerns may arise around healthcare payers using personal health data to potentially deny reimbursement of medical expenses

• Regulatory Issues– Agencies will need to continually adapt regulations on mobile

medical applications to support innovative ways to enhance health and healthcare delivery

– Multiple branches of Regulatory bodies will need to work together to thoroughly review “smart device” submissions

We’ve Barely Tipped the Innovation Scale

• Our eyes are the window into the body’s systemic conditions

• The promising impact of innovation spurs continued investment

• Innovation is critical in ensuring healthy vision as we age

• The merger of technology and healthcare will provide improved patient outcomes
