THE FACTS BEHIND ORAL BACTERIA

Dr. Mark Reichman OFMS

“Oral bacteria” are the billions of

microorganisms that populate the oral

cavity.

Streptococci and staphylococci are two some of the

most widely known.

There are between 500 and 1,000 different

kinds of bacteria in our mouths.

The mouths of infants are actually free from bacteria when they are

first born; it is introduced through their mouths within

hours of birth by their mothers through the natural process of

kissing and food sharing.

Our saliva flush bad bacteria through our

mouth, which makes it harder for bacteria to

stick to the surfaces of our teeth.

Some foods can wash away bacteria from the teeth. Try

crunchy vegetables like celery and carrots to stimulate the gums.

Acidic fruits like apples wash the teeth clean by

increasing saliva production.

Smoking increases the risk of periodontal disease because tobacco supplements the growth of harmful oral bacteria while destroying good

bacteria.

Oral bacteria multiply every

4-5 hours.

That’s why it’s important to brush your teeth twice a day!
