processing and clearance of cheques and other documents.

Many of you would have seen the magnetic inks bar codes printed on the bottom of your

bank's cheque leaves. These bar codes are known as MICR code, an abbreviation for

'Magnetic Ink Character Recognition'. Actually, the MICR is the name given to

the technology used in printing the code

Some Facts to Remember

Composition of the MICR code A MICR code is unique to each bank branch. Thus, a MICR code can be used to uniquely identify any bank branch. It comprises of 3 parts: 

1. The first three digits represent the city (City Code). They are aligned with the PIN code we use for postal addresses in India.

2. The next 3 digits represent the bank (Bank Code)

3. The last 3 digits represent the branch (Branch Code)
