Being a child or teenager today is not easy, the rise of cyberbullying, teen suicide, self harm and eating disorders amongst young adults has hit alarming numbers. This talk is to create awareness of the different social media platforms that are out there. It includes tips and advice on how to help your child or teenager become aware of what they are doing online and educate parents on the world of social media.

Twitter is an online social networking and microblogging service that enables users to send

and read short 140-character text messages, called "tweets". Registered users can read and

post tweets, but unregistered users can only read them.

Vine is a mobile app owned by Twitter that enables its users to create and post short

looping video clips. Video clips created with Vine have a maximum clip length of

seven seconds and can be shared to Vine's social network, or to other services such

as Twitter and Facebook

LinkedIn is a business-oriented Social networking service. Founded in December

2002 it is mainly used for professional networking. In 2006,LinkedIn reports more

than 259 million acquired users in more than 200 countries and territories

It is like Facebook for business, a great place to get found for your expertise by

recruiters or people who are looking to find your products or services as a business

owner.

Instagram is an online photo-sharing, video-sharing and social networking service

that enables its users to take pictures and videos, apply digital filters to them, and

share them on a variety of social networking services, such as Facebook, Twitter,

Tumblr and Flickr. A distinctive feature is that it confines photos to a square shape,

similar to Kodak Instamatic and Polaroid images, in contrast to the 16:9 aspect ratio

now typically used by mobile device cameras. Users are also able to record and

share short videos lasting for up to 15 seconds.

It was bought by Facebook for 1bn in April 2012.

Snapchat is a photo messaging application ("app") developed by Evan Spiegel and

Robert Murphy, then Stanford University students.[3][4][5] Using the application, users

can take photos, record videos, add text and drawings, and send them to a controlled

list of recipients. These sent photographs and videos are known as "Snaps". Users

set a time limit for how long recipients can view their Snaps (as of April 2014, the

range is from 1 to 10 seconds),[6] after which they will be hidden from the recipient's

device and deleted from Snapchat's servers.

without the other person knowing

WhatsApp Messenger is a cross-platform mobile messaging app which allows you to

exchange messages without having to pay for SMS.

You can create groups in here and share images and video.

for free.

You can share images & videos too.

Google has described Google+ as a "social layer" that enhances many of its online

properties, and that it is not simply a social networking website, but also an

authorship tool that associates web-content directly with its owner/author

You can do video conferencing through a Hangout.

YouTube is a video-sharing website, created by three former PayPal employees in February

2005 and owned by Google since late 2006, on which users can upload, view and share

videos.

Using Facebook profiles, Tinder gathers users' basic information and analyzes users'

social graph to match potential candidates who are most likely to be compatible

based on geographical location, number of mutual friends and common interests.

Based on the results of potential candidates, the app allows the user to anonymously

like or pass them. If two users like each other then it results in a "match" and Tinder

introduces the two users and opens a chat.

With a tap, FaceTime makes video calls over Wi-Fi from your iPhone, iPad, iPod

touch or Mac to someone else's. Or over mobile networks on iPhone or iPad.

You can download and use Skype everyday for voice and video calling, instant

messaging, sharing and low-cost local and international calls on your iPhone /iPad or

computer / laptop.

Oovoo is a free 12 way chat and instant messaging app.

Ask.fm is an anonymous question and answer platform website used regularly by lots of

young people in Ireland and around the world.

It allows anyone to post anonymous comments and questions to a person's profile and is increasingly

being used as a means to communicate abusive, bullying and sexualised content.

Qooh.me is a social site that allows people who find you interesting to ask you

anonymous questions so they can know you better.

Tumbl receives on avg. 81,000 uniques,

Entertainment, social networking service and news website where registered

community members can submit content, such as text posts or direct links. Only

registered users can then vote submissions "up" or "down" to organize the posts and

determine their position on the site's pages. Content entries are organized by areas of

interest called "subreddits".

Pheed is a free social multimedia platform that enables users to create, inspire and

share text, photos, videos, audio tracks, voice-notes and live broadcasts.

Pinterest is a pinboard-style photo-sharing website that allows users to create and

manage theme-based image collections such as events, interests, and hobbies.

Users can browse other pinboards for images, "re-pin" images to their own pinboards,

or "like" photo.

Great for planning home decor & weddings.

Secret & Whisper showcasing streams of short confessions from your contacts list or the near vicinity. Users comment or “love” posts anonymously, and often keep scrolling to find that golden nugget, a startling insight into what people really think but won’t say on Twitter

Let me tell you the story about how my family uses social media.

If they were in a cafe near you & you had free time to catch up for a coffee

would you?

Yes - then friend them on Facebook - if no then do not fill your feed with their

life information.

If you don’t want to de-friend or unfollow them you can block them so their

news is not interfering with your life

Lets talk about the elephant in the room - why are children being cyberbullied?

Would you give your child the keys to your car without a driving lesson? This is what it

is like letting children use social media without a conversation.

Put the computer in the kitchen?

Use it yourself - you do not have to be yourself - create another name - NOT to snoop

on your children.
