Citizen Science
“the general public engagement in scientific research activities
when citizens actively contribute to science either with their
intellectual effort or surrounding knowledge or with their tools and
resources.
Participants provide experimental data and facilities for researchers,
raise new questions and co-create a new scientific culture.
While adding value, volunteers acquire new learning and skills, and
deeper understanding of the scientific work in an appealing way.”

empowered citizens and enhanced research”.

Dror Brazil- Related to the Dror (Freiheit) Zionist Socialist Polish youth movement. The
largest in pre war Poland. Fought the Germans in the ghettos during the war.
- Incipient activities in Brazil began with end of the Vargas dictatorship in 1945.
Political activities previously forbidden were now permitted. Communication
with colleagues from Argentine facilitated the establishment of the movement
in the south most state of Brazil (Porto Alegre/RGS).

L A P A
The myth of origin of the movement focus on the Lapa meeting of the national leadership (and
that of Sao Paulo) that took place on May 1st 1950 .
The meeting decided that members should leave their university studies and dedicate
themselves full time to organizational work, to become prepared for physical and manual work
(proletarization) and to settle in Israel. This caused a strong shock to the families and to the
Jewish community. It was a crucial event in the life of the community and the members.
The first group that arrived in Israel attempted to establish a joint Latin
American Kibbutz. But soon there was a split and in 1952 the Brazilian
group settled in Bror Chail (established in 1948 by the Egyptian youth
movement). Bror Chail later became known as the Brazilian kibbutz.

Dror Brazilian footprints
The former national secretary of Dror,
Paulo Singer, remained in Brazil. He
was on of the founders of the Partido
dos Trabalhadores (PT) serving as
secretary for Solidary Economy in the
PT government.
fWomen’s rights activists looked
towards ideals of sexual
emancipation associated with the
Kibbutz movement. This is well
expressed in the comprehensive
research work on Dror carried out
by Prof. Carla Bassanezi Pinsky
(University of Campinas).

Message from Mr. President of the Republic on the occasion
of the 60th Anniversary of the Democratic Socialist Youth
Movement “Habonim Dror” and the Kibbutz Bror Chail
Brasilia, May 14th 2008
Comrades,
To commemorate a journey of 60 years of realizations is
certainly a delicious sensation.
This is what I imagine to be the sentiment of the members
of the Habonim Dror Movement and the Kibbutz Bror Chail,
with whom I feel like a brother in this moment of happy
commemoration.
Everywhere Bror Chail is known as the Kibbutz of the
Brazilians. In this sense it is also my Kibbutz. In the same
way as Brazil is the land of thousands of Jews that landed
here and have contributed to make Brazil a great Nation.
When I became acquainted with the history of Dror, it came
to my mind the fight for the establishment of PT in Brazil,
carried out in name of the ideals of social justice, freedom
and democracy.
Both, each one in his own way, were moved by a fiery
energy of liberation and humanism.
Even if we find obstacles in the way, sometimes difficult to
overcome, and there is still a long way to go, I am sure this
is the correct path and a promising future is reserved for
Brazil and Israel, and for the present and future
generations.
I wish, from my heart, that you in Israel and we in Brazil
continue to cherish the same dreams and ideals, seeking a
world increasingly fair and solidary.
Congratulations and happy commemorations.
Shalom,
Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva
Presidente da República Federativa do Brasil
A community of memory
- The Association established as a framework for the production of the event
continued its activities. Its main focus was the publication of a book of
memoirs by former members from Brazil and Israel: Fragmentos de Memoria
(Fragments of Memory) organized and edited by Dr. Avraham Milgram (Tito)
a professional historian.
- Another line of activity of the association was care for the archive of
movement. Documents related to the movement are kept in different
archives, in Brazil and Israel and a substantial part belong to the local archive
of Kibbutz Bror Chail.
Interest in the documents related to the production of the event led to a
continuing requests for the re-organization of the materials in the archive and
its digitization.
- The digitization project described here is the latest phase of this continuing
process.

The Dror Brazil Archives’ ProjectDocuments concerning Dror Brazil are distributed in various archives: AHJB, Yad
Tabenkin, Central Zionist Archives, Bror Chail (… and more)
Presently the focus is on 22 boxes of documents held in the Bror Chail archive
Following an initial process of getting organized the boxes and folders were
described by volunteers from the Bror Chail Archive (members of the Kibbutz).
Funds were gathered and a steering committee established. The physical
digitization began and the guidelines for cataloguing was prepared. The
cataloguing will be carried out by a group of volunteers (about 28-30) who were
among the first groups of members of the movement.
Cataloguing instructions were developed on basis of International standards and
guidelines: development of controlled vocabularies - Kinds of documents; Roles
in the movement; Related institutions; Names and aliases of members.
Digitization of first batch (half) of the document completed now. It is planned to
register (describe) the members of Dror in Wikidata to serve for the enrichment
of the descriptions.f
