Hannah AudetPeriod 1

In To Kill a Mockingbird, gender roles are not interchangeable, and males and females each have their roles. Scout received negative attention because she is a tomboy, and everybody is trying to get her to act like a lady, something she is supposed to be. I chose gender stereotyping because I would like to learn the reason for this segregation, because men and women are equal, but they are not always seen that way.

These are pictures of what the ideal young boy and girl of the 30s looked like. The girls wear dresses (1st picture) or jewelry and dress-up (2nd picture) and the young boys wore pants and other clothes that gave them the ability to play and get dirty.

This is a stereotypical housewife from around the 50s and 60s. Most men expected their wives to be ready with food and a clean house after work. Now this is not as expected, because men stay at home as well as women, although it is not as common.

Humans are not the only things that are gender stereotyping; computers do it too. Most people would not search “iron my skirt”, but rather “iron my shirt” because generally, a man would not be searching for ironing. Usually ironing and other housework is a woman’s job.

Many jobs in this day and age, especially with the recession, are open to both men and women, but some jobs are not as socially accepted. There are many male doctors, but not as many nurses, and male nurses are excluded, and might be the odd man out at work, segregated from the women.

For the better part of the century, females did not hold jobs or positions that gave them authority over men. Generally, the women were secretaries and answered phones, made appointments, and basically did anything their boss needed them to do. Now, the roles are switched in many places, and although it is not yet accepted by everyone, it is becoming more common.

Laundry and other housework is usually a woman’s job, and boys and men do not usually do it. Work around the house is left up to women to teach their daughters, while earning money and working outside of the house is for the men.

Generally, men are seen as being superior to women, and able to hold higher positions and do things better.

The majority of sports, including professional and amateur, are split into male and female teams. Men and women each have their own teams, and some sports are not even open to both sexes.

I think that in the future, men and women will be more equal because of the modern advances, but to some people, I think men will still be seen as better.
