The earliest record of a settlement dates back to 985AD, when King Ethelred II gave land to Lady Wulfruna
The area became known as Wulfruna’s Heantune, meaning Wulfruna’s High Town. From this we get the name Wolverhampton

Wolverhampton has a long history in manufacturing, starting with weaving and wool products moving on to metal crafts in the 1700’s
This includes the famous Chubb company who make locks and safes

In the 20th Century, transport became a major industry with bicycles, motor cycles, cars, trams, buses and air planes all being built here
Today, Wolverhampton retains a thriving aero-space industry supplying control systems to most of the world’s airlines

Wolverhampton has a population of over 236,900 people living within the city area, according to 2006 census
27% of these are from ethnic minorities, which is higher than the national average
