1Critical Thinking

“Any intelligent fool can make

things bigger, more complex, and

more violent. It takes a touch of

genious- and a lot of courage – to

move in the opposite direction

Albert Einstein

Critical thinking is the process we use to reflect on assess and judge the

assumption underlying our own and others ideas and efforts.

Critical thinking enables us to recognise a wide range of subjective analyses of

otherwise objective data, and to evaluate how well each analysis might meet

our needs. Facts may be facts, but how we interpret them may vary.

WHAT IS CRITICAL THINKING?

2Creative Thinking

Creative thinking is the process we use to start something from “nothing” and

generating great, original and unique values.

Everyone is creative.

Individual creativity comes from the expression of individual authenticity.

Team creativity comes from the appreciation and synergistic use of

differences. Playfulness increases the likelihood that creativity will occur

The more we believe we are creative, the more creative we will be.

CREATIVE THINKING?

“Creativity is one of the last remaining legal

ways of gaining an unfair advantage over

the competition.

Ed McCabe

Thinking process is like a kayak with 2 paddles,

one is creative thinking while the other

represents critical thinking

“THE BEST WAY TO HAVE GOOD IDEAS

IS TO HAVE LOTS OF IDEAS - AND

THEN THROW AWAY THE BAD ONES

Linus Pauling

It’s about using your whole brain, not just

one side or the other

4How?

The process is easy

CREATIVE THINKINGCRITICAL THINKING

Imagine a painting

Plan the composition

Choose brushes and

paints

Prepare the canvas

Sketch the painting

Evaluate the sketch

Paint the image

Improve the painting

Complete the painting

Present the artwork

Both creative thinking and critical thinking skills are valuable and neither is superior. In

fact, it has been shown that when either is omitted during the problem solving process,

effectiveness declines.
