ON TO

SEMANTICS

is the technical term used to refer to the study of meaning, and, since meaning is a part of language,

semantics is a part of linguistics.

Semantics is the branch of

linguistics that deals with the study of

meaning, changes in meaning, and the

principles that govern the relationship

between sentences or words and their

meanings.

It is the study of the relationships

between signs and symbols and what

they represent.

An understanding of semantics isessential to the study of languageacquisition.

The study of semantics includes the study of how meaning is constructed, interpreted, clarified, obscured, illustrated, simplified, negotiated, contradicted, and paraphrased

The noun semantics and the adjectivesemantic are derived from the Greek wordsemantikos (“significant”).

In linguistics, semantics is the subfield that isdevoted to the study of meaning, as borne on thesyntactic levels of words, phrases, sentences, andsometimes larger units of discourse, genericallyreferred to as texts.

To understand language we need to know themeaning of words and the morphemes thatcompose them. We also must know how themeanings of words combine into phrases andsentence meanings. Finally, we must considercontext when determining meaning.

The study of the linguistic meaning ofmorphemes, words, phrases, and sentences iscalled Semantics.
