PLANT DISEASES

Plant disease is an impairment of the normal state of a plant that interrupts or modifies its vital functions

SOME COMMON PLANT DISEASES

• BUD ROT IN COCONUT• ROOT WILT IN COCONUT• BLIGHT DISEASE IN PADDY• DECAY DISEASE IN RUBBER• QUICK WILT IN PEPPER• BUNCHY TOP DISEASE IN

PLANTAIN

BUD ROT IN COCONUT

CAUSED BY BACTERIA

SYMPTOMS• GROWING TIP OR BUD DECAYS

PREVENTION• CUT AND BURN

SEVERELY AFFECTED PLANTS

• REMOVE ALL AFFECTED TISSUE OF CROWN AND APPLY BORDEAUX MIXTURE

ROOT WILT IN COCONUT

CAUSED BY BACTERIA

SYMPTOMS

DECAYING ROOTS

GENERAL YELLOWING AND MARGINAL NECROSIS IN LEAVES

OVERALL PRODUCTION DECREASES

PREVENTIONCUT AND REMOVE DISEASE ADVANCED PLANTS

APPLY BALANCED DOSE OF CHEMICAL FERTILISER

BLIGHT DISEASE IN PADDY

CAUSED BY BACTERIA

SYMPTOMSLEAVES DRY FROM TIP TO BASE

SPOTS APPEAR ALONG EDGES OF LEAVES

PREVENTION

• SUPPLYING A BALANCED AMOUNT OF PLANT NUTRIENTS ESPECIALLY NITROGEN

DECAY DISEASE IN RUBBER

CAUSED BY

FUNGUS

SYMPTOMSSTEM SHRUNKS, SPLITS AND RED FLUID OOZES OUT FROM SPLIT REGION

PREVENTION

• PAINTING WITH FUNGICIDES

•SPRAYING BORDEAUX MIXTURE FOR TREES NOT IN TAPPING

QUICK WILT IN PEPPER

CAUSED BY

FUNGUS

SYMPTOMSLEAVES WITH WATER SOAKED LESIONS AND FIMBRICATE MARGIN

PREVENTION

•THROUGH PROPER WATER REGULATION

•CROP ROTATION

•USE OF HIGH TEMPERATURE BY STEAM HEAT

BUNCHY TOP DISEASE IN PLANTAIN

• CAUSED BY BANANA BUNCHY TOP VIRUS

• VECTOR APHIDS

SYMPTOMS•New leaves that are produced are narrower than normal, yellow, and flat

•Any fruit is produced, which is unusual, it will be deformed

PREVENTIONCHEMICAL CONTROL OF APHID VECTORS

DESTRUCTION OF INFECTED PLANTS

CONCLUSION

Since the beginning of agriculture, generations of farmers have been evolving practices for combating the various plagues suffered by our crops.

Following discovery of the causes of plant diseases in the early 19th century, our growing understanding of the interactions of pathogen and host has enabled us to develop a wide array of measures for the control of specific plant diseases

The goal of plant disease management is to reduce the economic and aesthetic damage caused by plant diseases
