Securing the future
of high tech products
SP in Denmark- from research to
field tests
Electronics are embedded in a growing number of everyday products.
They surround us without being given a second thought. Each new pro-
duct generation contains more and increasingly advanced electronics
than its predecessor and the trend is expected to continue.
SP in Denmark
SP in Denmark is an audited subcontractor for SP in Sweden with test laboratories
within EMC, climatic and mechanical testing.
We offer services within physical failure analysis, error tracing and repair of
electronics. We have a modern well-equipped material science laboratory as well as
electronics analysis and repair equipments. Most of our employees are former Nokia
specialists and we have several decades of experience within electronics testing,
materials and production.
Our mission is to help developers, manufacturers and suppliers of electronics with
the necessary basis for approvals as well as improving the reliability of their products.
We give you a rare combination of technical knowledge of electronics and skilled
operators of advanced equipment.

Management of unintentional electronic noise is necessary in order to obtain compa-
tibility between electronics located in the same environment. We work with EMC for
the product’s complete lifecycle - from the concept and design phase to EMC testing
and troubleshooting.
Compliance testing
As a third party test laboratory, SP in Denmark can perform independent testing
in accordance with many standards within both emission and immunity. We can
provide EMC compliance testing for both the European (CE) and American (FCC)
markets. This means that we can issue certificates confirming that a particular
product meets the relevant requirements.
Save costs - think ahead
There are many technical alternatives for EMC solutions at the beginning and
these are limited at the end of the design or construction phase. We can conduct a
pre-compliance test during the development stages in order to assess whether the
requirements have been fulfilled, thus avoiding late stage redesign and costly delays.
We have facilities for • Radiated immunity and emission tests
• Conducted immunity and emission tests
• DC & AC transients
• Electrostatic discharge (ESD)
By measuring the radiated transmit power at various locations surrounding a
device we get a spatially distributed visual and measured 3D characterization of
the antenna radiation performance. The measured radiation pattern can be used
to determine the total radiated power, efficiency and directivity of the antenna.
Measurements are performed according to 3GPP Over-the-Air (OTA) specifications,
which is the European equivalent to CTIA.

Reliability of electronic devices is becoming increasingly important in the global competitive markets – not only to fulfil legal require-ments, but also to ensure low field failure rates and high consumer satisfaction. We help our customers to increase the robustness and reliability of their electronic
devices through specially tailored tests and test plans that reflect real life exposures,
debug prototypes or screen production quality – not only to fulfil public standards but
also to fulfil consumer expectations.
The markets for electronic devices are global. This means that the devices must be
able to withstand almost any climate. We are able to simulate all weather conditions,
both natural conditions such as sunlight, salt mist, temperatures, rain and combined
exposures, but also man-made conditions such as air pollution, chemicals and extreme
temperatures.
Both consumer and industrial electronic devices will be exposed to intended and unintended mechanical effects during their lifetime.
We are able to test and simulate most mechanical effects including drops/fall, vibrations, wear and cyclic usage/fatigue. Some of these exposures can even be combined with simultaneously corrosive or climatic exposures to simulate real life.
In combination with the mechanical impact tests, we can conduct additional analysis during tests by using high speed cameras, resonance and modal analysis (touch free).
The weather is everywhere!
The environment is dangerous!

We know what errors look like

We have advanced state-of-the-art analysis facilities that provide unique investi-
gation opportunities within electrical and physical failure analysis. This can provide
unique data in the areas of prototype evaluation, supplier control, legal require-
ments, root cause analysis, or for marketing material.
If a component fails - what is the reason?
It is often important to identify causes and responsibility. This is where failure analysis is an excellent tool.
Failure analysis is one of the most effective means of identifying the causes of a failure in an electronic system. Electronic components and structures are extremely complicated chemical and physical structures with failure mechanisms, which require experts for identifications. This is where SP’s experience in test and quality evaluation and well-equipped analysis laboratories serves its customers.
We inspect the product, internally and externally: • Inspection of visible surfaces • Mount in epoxy and cross section • Non-intrusive inspection in X-ray equipment
Materials in electronic devices
At SP we are dedicated to understanding materials, both on a practical and scientific
level. The SP team in Denmark has extensive knowledge of materials and the proces-
ses used in the production of electronic devices – both related to electronic produc-
tion, encapsulations and cosmetic areas.
We have the capacity to help customers to choose the right materials and set up
specifications and quality tests at their own production facilities or their suppliers –
so let SP be your science partner from the beginning of your development phase.
In the event of limited prototype functionality, we provide services for electrical error
tracing, repairs and rework of electronic devices. The electrical error tracing laboratory
includes electrical measurement equipment, solder stations, reballing, repair station,
microscopes, X-ray etc.
Wasting money on running changes in production and low yield? We can support you in the areas of design for manufacturing, reliability review, product safety and liability, component sourcing and factory build support. This also includes
hands-on experience with SMD (Surface Mount Device) production and implementa-
tion of new mass production technologies in SMD manufacturing lines.
Implementing new technologies and concepts is always risky! We work in global teams to assist with risk assessment of new technologies andconcepts. This ranges from maturity statements, design guidelines and possible failure
modes – all in all crucial parameters to include in the early conceptual phase of
new products or upgrades of products already in the market.

The prototype is unique and expensive!

At SP we are aware of the complexity and significance of getting even a single
prototype up and running. We understand the importance and value of extracting
as much information as possible from the prototype to obtain a high level of
maturity in the final product.
We have experience in evaluating and testing prototypes – even when full
functionality is not available. Our strategies include non-destructive evaluation
methods followed by carefully designed tests that generate valuable data about
housing tightness, mechanical robustness, production quality on component and
assembly levels.

SP Technical Research Institute of Sweden is a leading international research
institute employing around 1 200 staff. The Group consists of the parent company and a
number of subsidiaries. Together, they create a powerful group of research and develop-
ment institutes aimed at innovation and sustainable development of industry and society.
We have chosen to focus in particular on six business areas in order to add value to
the sustainable development of industry and society. These are: Energy, Risk, Safety and
Security, Information and Communications Technology ICT, The Built Environment, Life
Science and Transportation. The overall strength of our six business areas means that
we can effectively contribute to industrial competitiveness and help to tackle the major
challenges faced by society.
