A synchrotron is a cyclic particle

accelerator in which a charged particle is

accelerated to very high energies in the

presence of an alternating electric field

while confined to a constant circular orbit

by a magnetic field.

THE Electron Synchrotron was first

constructed by EDWIN MCMILLAN at the

University Of California in1945.

It was designed for 320 –to-350 Mev Energy Range.

The Electron Gun :

A heated cathode produces free electrons

which are pulled through a hole in the end of

the gun by a radio frequency electric field.

Linear accelerator is used for the preliminary

acceleration of electrons upto energies of 50

to 100 kev.

The linear accelerator feeds into the Booster

Ring which uses magnetic field to force the

electrons to travel in a circle.

The Booster Ring feeds electrons into the

Storage Ring, a many sided doughnut

shaped tube. The doughnut shaped vacuum

chamber is enclosed in a ring of C-shaped

magnet.

After the beam of light is generated in the

storage ring it travels towards the

experimental station.

After travelling through the beam line, the

radiation can finally be used in the various

experiments.

Based on :

Directing beams to hit specific targets or

colliding beams onto each other.

Production of thin beams of synchrotron light.

Synchrotron radiation covers spectroscopy, X-

ray microscopy, crystallography of proteins.

In medicine, beams are used for Positron

Emission Tomography(PET), therapy of

tumours,and for surgery.
