“The Master & Commander of the Storms of Life”

~ Luke 8:22-25 ~

1 The question about the faith of the disciples

2

Be on the lookout for two important questions…

The question about the identity of Jesus

One day he got into a boat with his

Luke 8:22-23

disciples, and he said to them, “Let’sgo across to the other side of the lake.” So they set out [and other other boats were with them (Mk. 4:36)],and as they sailed he fell asleep….

And a windstorm came down on the

Luke 8:23

lake, [so that the boat was beingswamped by waves (Mt. 8:24)], and they were filling with water and werein danger. [But he was in the stern asleep on the cushion (Mark 4:37)]….

“Save me, O God! !For the waters have come

up to my neck…. !Let not the flood sweep

over me, or the deep swallow me up.” ~ Psalm 65:1, 15

And they went and woke him, saying,

Luke 8:24

“Master, Master, we are perishing.[Do you not care that we areperishing?” (Mk. 4:38)]….

And he awoke and rebuked the

Luke 8:24

raging wind and waters [and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” (Mk 4:39)],and they ceased, and [there wasa great calm (Mark 4:39)]….

He said to them, “Where is your

Luke 8:25

faith? [Why are you so afraid?”(Mark 4:40)]…

And they were afraid […they were

Luke 8:25

filled with great fear (Mk. 4:41)], and they marveled, saying to oneanother, “Who then is this, that hecommands even winds and water, and they obey him…?”

“O God of our salvation…who stills the roaring of the seas, the roaring of

the waves.…”

~ Psalm 65:5-8

“You rule the raging of the sea; when its waves

rise, you still them.”~ Psalm 89:9

“At your rebuke they [i.e., the waters] fled; at your sound they took to flight.”

~ Psalm 104:7

Why does Luke record this story in his historical biography of Jesus?

Important Question

We ought to audaciously trust in Jesus,

our Master and the Commander of the storms of life.

Main Point

Answer the question,

“Who is this man?”

“All things were made through him, and without

him was not any thing made that was made.”

“For by him all things were created…!all things were created through him!

and for him.”

~ John 1:1

~ Colossians 1:16

“[We are] waiting for our blessed hope, !the appearing of our great God!

and Savior Jesus Christ.”~ Titus 2:13

Develop a theology of the storms of life

“Dear friends, do not be surprised at the painful trial you are suffering, as though something

strange were happening to you.”! ~ The Apostle Peter

in 1 Peter 4:12

“And we know that for those who love God all things work

together for good….”~ The Apostle Paul

in Romans 8:28

~ The Apostle Peter in 1 Peter 4:12

“In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, so that the tested genuineness

of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be

found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.”

Determine to trust Christ…

…without qualifications

“If the sight of Jesus bowing his head into that ultimate storm [of God’s justice upon the cross] is burned into the core of

your being, you will never say, ‘God, don’t you care?’

And if you know that he did not abandon you in that ultimate storm…,

“…what makes you think he would abandon you in the much smaller storms you’re experiencing right now? And, someday, of

course, he will return and still all storms for eternity.”

Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are Mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be

with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through

the fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you….

…For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior….

you are precious in my eyes, and honored, and I love you.

~ Isaiah 43
