- Shipper requirements when acting as an offerer
- 5. Carrier Requirements
- Keep in mind that carriers may impose requirements that are
stricter than the the 49CFR Hazardous Materials Regulations.
-
- For example, UPS does not ship HazMat Internationally.
- 6. Shippers Acting As Carriers
- If you ship or deliver an Air bag module in your own vehicle,
such as your own pick-up truck or delivery van, then you MUST
comply 100% with these regulations.
- Failing to comply with these regulations can cost up to
$27,500/day/incident.
- 7. Structure of the HMR
- The U.S. DOT Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR) are found in
Title 49, CFR, Parts 100 185.

- All HazMat Employees require 4 types of training:
-
- Driver Training (for drivers who transport hazmat)
- Initial training within 90 days of employment.
- Recurrent training every 3 years.
- Training documentation/certification is required to be kept on
file.
- 12. What are Hazardous Materials? 171.8
- HAZARDOUS MATERIALS - are any substance or materials, which has
been determined by the Secretary of Transportation to be capable of
posing an unreasonable risk to health, safety, and property when
transported in commerce, and which has been so designated .
- 13. Materials are Classified Based on Their Hazard
Characteristics
- There are 9 DOT hazard classes (HC):
-
- Flammable & Combustible Liquids;
-
- Oxidizers & Organic Peroxides;
- 14. Air bag modules, pyrotechnic are DOT Class 9 Hazardous
Materials
- Air bag modules, pyrotechnic, Air bag inflators, pyrotechnic,
& Seat-belt pretensioners, pyrotechnic are classified as Class
9 Miscellaneous hazardous materials.
- 15. Air bag modules, compressed are DOT Division 2.2 Hazardous
Materials
- Air bag modules, compressed gas, Air bag inflators, compressed
gas, & Seat-belt pretensioners, compressed gas are classified
as Division 2.2 Non-Flammable Gas hazardous materials.
- 16. Hazmat Shipping Papers 172.200
- A shipping paper is one method of communicating that what we
are shipping is a hazardous material. There are many different
kinds of shipping papers that we can use.
- Each person who offers for transportation a hazardous material
must prepare a hazardous materials shipping paper.
- 17. General Entries 172.201
- Hazmat Shipping Papers provide information on:
-
- Shipper/receiver name and address;
-
- Emergency Response Information; &
-
- Certification and Signature.

- Trade names may not give enough information about the material
and are not acceptable as shipping names. Consequently, the basic
description will be used to describe the nature of the shipment.
You must enter the description of each hazardous material on the
shipping paper in this exact order :

material(s) involved in the incident, and protecting themselves and
the general public during the initial response phase of the
incident.
- 41. 2000 ERG Layout
