CODES AND CONVENTIONS OF A MUSIC VIDEO.

The Codes and Conventions of a Music Video, are the different techniques used to construct meaning and

themes within the video. The techniques can be divided into two types; technical and symbolic.

This is how meaning is conveyed using any technical equipment, such as the way camera angles are used to construct different types of shots, how sound is used, either diagetic or non-diagetic, and the pace and style

of editing.

TECHNICAL.

Symbolic techniques are ways of showing meanings beyond what the audience can see, through mis-en-scene; which involves props, settings, costumes and

makeup.

SYMBOLIC

Codes and conventions are useful for various reasons. Primarily, it means that the audience can become

familiar with a particular genre, and begin to recognise different conventions within that particular genre.

They provide a structure that the audience can understand, and also ensure the lyrics of the song fit in

with the video.
