Where can you find Endangered Animals?

Endangered Animals are on every continent.

Around 5000 different endangered animals today.

500 extinctions have occurred in this century.

What does “Endangered” mean?

Endangered Animal: An animal at risk of becoming extinct because of human activity such as hunting or changes in climate. The United States Fish and Wildlife Services determines which animals are on the list.

Familiar Animals from around the World

Some endangered animals can be found in zoos.

You would be very lucky to spot them in the wild.

POLAR BEARS•Polar bears live in the Arctic.•They rely on packs of ice by currents of water.•They eat seals which are found on the ice.

•Endangered because of the melting ice packs. •Loss of ice equals less habitat available.•Poaching is declining their population.

HUMMINGBIRDS•Hummingbirds are known for their colorful feathers.•Hummingbirds can fly backwards and upside down!•They use their long tongue to suck nectar.

•Loss of habitat endangers these birds.•Climate change affects their migration.•Change makes it harder to find food.

DOLPHINS•Dolphins are found all over the world.•They live in oceans everywhere.•Dolphins are known for being intelligent.

•Marine pollution threatens their lives.•Warmer climates make dolphins move locations.•Moving causes difficulty to find food.

SEA TURTLE•Sea turtles live the majority of their lives in the water.•They go through long migration periods through the ocean.•Female sea turtles lay eggs on the beach.

•Coastal storms threaten the safety of the eggs that are nested on the beach.•Sea turtles can get caught in fishing nets and hooks.

Endangered Animals in Michigan Michigan is home to some

endangered animals. The majority of Michigan’s

endangered animals are insects, bats, and birds.

Remember to be careful of endangered animals that may live in your backyard!

INDIANA BAT•Indiana bats are very small, their wing span is 9 to 11 inches.•They hibernate in caves during the winter.•These bats eat insects found along rivers or lakes.

•Indiana bats were first listed as endangered in 1967.•Human disturbance of their hibernation is the number one reason.•They are also vulnerable to pesticides and loss of habitat.

MITCHELL'S SATYR BUTTERFLY•This butterfly is one of the worlds rarest.•It is found only in Michigan and Indiana.•The butterfly has 4 to 5 black eye spots ringed with yellow on the tips of their wings.

•The biggest threat to this butterfly is loss of habitat.•Wildfires, floods, and other changes in wetlands have almost diminished their habitat.

GRAY WOLF•Gray wolfs are the largest members of the wild dog family.•They are found living in all types of habitats besides tropical rainforests.

•Wolf population is threatened by humans.•Loss of habitat also is a factor for why Gray Wolves are endangered.•Humans believe Wolfs are dangerous which is a reason for why they are killed so often.

KIRTLAND'S WARBLER•Kirtland’s Warbler is a song bird.•It lives in the Jack Pine tree.•They migrate to the Bahamas for the winter.

•Kirtland’s Warbler population is in danger because of loss of habitat.•They also are in competition with other birds for nesting space.•Fortunately, their numbers have been rising again in the past few years.

How you can help! Adopt an animal! Help preserve

wildlife habitats! Build a birdfeeder,

plant a tree! Recycle to reduce

waste!

Plan an adventure! Take a walk

through your backyard.

Attend a nature center.

Ask your parents to take you to the zoo!
