1970: National Environmental Policy Act

– Mandated that Federal agencies state the environmental impact of projects

– Established the Council on Environmental Quality

1970: Resource Conservation and Recovery Act

– Allows the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) to promote solid waste recycling and recovery

1976: Toxic Substances Control Act• Mandated that

manufacturers test their products for any possible human or environmental harm before selling them

1980: Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act

• Created a fund that cleaned up waste and oil spills, charging the dumpers for the cleanup costs

1990: Clean Air Act

• EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) strengthens regulation of air pollution
