Background

O Data storage devices

O Popular in our lives

O Known as secondary storage devices

O 2 types of data storage devices

O Hard Disk Drive (HDD)

O Solid State Drive (SSD)

Background

O HDD:O IBM 1956O Magnetic coating on metal plattersO Data are read/written by movements

of magnetic heads.

Background

O SSD:O 1950sO Controller and NAND flash memory

chipsO Data are read/written by read/write

functions

Objective and Audience

O Objective

O Provide the statistical figures

O Compare differences between HDD and

SSD

O Manufacturers

O identify which drives will be more suitable

O educate their end users.

Literature ReviewO Highlight differences between drives

O Primary advantages of both drives

O Research gap in past researches

DifferencesO Power consumption:

O SSD uses 5% of system power O HDD uses 10% of system power O Power usage of SSD is half of a HDD

in both state.

DifferencesO Price of SSD is significantly higher:

O Highly complex process.O Sophisticated flash memory

O Heat dissipation of SSD is lower:O Uses lesser power than HDD

Primary AdvantagesO Primary advantages of SSD:

O Faster performanceO Booting up of PCO Launching of applications

O Primary advantages of HDD:O Higher maximum storage capacity

O Up to 4 Terabytes

Primary AdvantagesO Reasons why HDD lost in

performance:O More time spent waiting for platters

to access data

O Reasons why SSD lost in storage capacity:O Limitations in size of transistors and

parts in SSD

Research Gap

O Little has shown:

O Temperature fluctuation at different

intervals

O Statistical figures of boot up and

read/write speed with a fair

environment

MethodO The aim of the experiments were to

obtain data to evaluate the performance of each of the drives.

O Three experiments:O Boot-up speedO Read & Write speedO Operating temperature

Materials

O 13-inch Apple MacBook Pro x2

O 256GB SSD

O 500GB HDD

O Stopwatch

Materials (Cont’d)O Blackmagic Disk

Speed TestO A software used to

assess storage drives’ read and write performance.

O It obtains the drives’ performance by comparing the time taken to write and read large data to and from the drive.

Materials (Cont’d)O iStat Menus

O A software that allow users to monitor detailed information of the computer in real time.

O It makes use of the sensors built inside of the computer to obtain the hardware information.

Power up both MacBook and

start the stopwatch

Note the time taken for each

of them to complete the

process

Procedures

1. Boot-up speed

Repeat process for another 4 times

Finally, obtain the average from the results gathered.

Procedures (Cont’d)

2. Read & Write speedStart

Blackmagic

Speed Test

Allow it to run for

5 minutes

Note down the

results

Repeat process for another 3

times

Finally, obtain the average from the results gathered.

Procedures (Cont’d)

3. Operating temperature

Run iStat Menus

Note down the operating temperature of the drive

Repeat process for another 3 times every 15 minutes

Finally, obtain the average from all the results.

Q&AO What is secondary storage device?O Why our results are different from

result on Internet?O Should I use SSD or HDD?O Future trend of SSD and HDD?O Why we use Mac OS?O Maximum capacity of SSD and HDD ?O Maximum speed of SSD and HDD

Q&AO What is secondary storage device?

O external memory and auxiliary storage

O Hold information even the power is offO Why our results are different from

result on Internet?O The use period of laptop, HDD and

SSDO The different version O Environment factor: number of

application, …

Q&AO Should I use SSD or HDD?O If:

O storage capacity, up to 4TBO Don’t want to spend much moneyO Don’t care too much about how fast a

computer boots up or opens programs O If:

O You are willing to pay for faster performanceO Don’t mind limited storage capacity or can

work around that.

Q&AO Future trend of SSD and HDD?

O SSD: O Increase its capacityO Decrease its price

O HDD: O Increase it performance or improve its

desity

Q&AO Why we use Mac OS?

O As we only find 2 identical laptop using Mac OS

O If we can find 2 identical laptop using Window, then we also can use Window

O The results also depend on the operating system

Q&AO Maximum capacity of SSD and HDD ?

O SSD: 2 TBO HDD: 4TB

O Maximum speed of SSD and HDDO SSD: SATA 6 GB/sO HDD: 10’000 rpm (200 MB/s)
