Structure

1. Context

2. Technology – Virtual Immersive Environment

3. Libraries and SL

4. VIAKISK – case study

Our new chance to be part of it!

Our new chance to rebuild!

Our new chance to innovative!

The point is to be competitive!

Communicate efficient and effective Use project management Save resources Be open, creative and share knowledge Do experiments Work hard and be patient

“If you can dream it, you can do it.” Walt Disney

Communicate with your users! Vít Richter says: “Libraries should focus among

others on using everything offered by new technologies, provide new services in digital environment, implemented standardized level of LLL and be maximally wheelchair available”.

What is Second Life?

Why libraries should use this technology?

- There is a Game generation

- Libraries should have “know-how” about VIE.

- Libraries should provide save VIE for their users and other institutions and organizations.

- Libraries should instruct others, how to do it.

How about a money?

1.) COST SAVING

„IBM says it saved about $350,000 by hosting its October conference in Second Life.“

Resource: http://www-03.ibm.com/ibm/academy/meeting/wsj_article_08192009.shtml

2.) TIME SAVING

Consider...

1.) “Gartner Says 80 Percent of Active Internet Users Will Have A "Second Life" in the Virtual World by the End of 2011”

Resource: http://www.gartner.com/it/page.jsp?id=503861

2.) Hype Cycle

VIE Vs. Web

I * I = EI = Immersion/Interactivity

E = Engagement

How about Libraries?

There are tens of libraries.

There are hundreds of librarians.

There are hundreds of events held by libraries.

Lets check it up...

What does libraries do in SL?

VIAKISK – number of Visitors

What users think about SL? What kind of problems did you have during your stay on

VIAKISK?

What users think about SL? What kind of event would you like to visit?

What users think about SL? Would you like to learn on VIAKISK regularly?

How about the future

- We are working on integration of Central Library of Faculty of Social Studies, Masaryk University.

- We want VIAKISK to became as intersection within LIS and librarians in CZE and SK.

- We want organize informal LIS meetings (5x per year) and solve actual problems and questions.

Conclusion

SL is one of the appropriate technology, which can be used in order to enhance communication with game generation.

SL is not the best one, but it is one of possible ways.

SL brings lot of opportunities, but also lots of barriers.
