YOUR SEAT,

JESUS’SEAT

1 My brothers, do not show favoritism asyou hold on to the faith in our gloriousLord Jesus Christ.2 For example, a man comes into yourmeeting wearing a gold ring and dressedin fine clothes, and a poor man dressed indirty clothes also comes in.

JAMES 2:1-7

3 If you look with favor on the man wearing the fine clothes and say, “Sit here in a good place,” and yet you say to the poor man, “Stand over there,” or, “Sit here on the floor by my footstool,” 4 haven’t you discriminated among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts?

JAMES 2:1-7

5 Listen, my dear brothers: Didn’t God choosethe poor in this world to be rich in faith andheirs of the kingdom that He has promised tothose who love Him?6 Yet you dishonored that poor man. Don’t therich oppress you and drag you into the courts?

JAMES 2:1-7

7 Don’t they blaspheme the noble name that was pronounced over you at your baptism?

JAMES 2:1-7

SEAT

IS

VERY

IMPORTANT

IN THE

WORLD IT

DETERMINES

YOUR STATUS

SEAT

IN THE BIBLE

REPRESENTS

GLORY AND

CONTROL

IN FCC

ALL OF US

ARE EQUAL

CHRISTIANITY IS

FOR EQUALS

GETTING WHAT

YOU PAY FOR

DISTINCTIONS

ARE EVIL

When in the movies, it's perfectly okay to pay for your seat.

But it's not okay to do this

inside the church.

You should be seated wherever you want to be seated.

All people should be treated equal.

There should not be partiality like this.

Christianity

Vs.

Religion

Religion - you get what you earn.

Christianity - you get what Jesus earns. It's grace.

Their problem is that the church is behaving in a worldly way.

WHO HAS

THE BEST SEAT?

WHO

SITS IN

YOUR LIFE?

The church is in the world but belongs to the kingdom. These are God’s

people, Jesus’ people.

The problem is that sometimes the church thinks in a way that is more

worldly and less like Jesus’ kingdom.

The Problem: PARTIALITY

Prosperity Theologyvs.

Poverty Theology

Prosperity Theology: Rich people are good, bad, poor people are bad

Poverty Theology: poor people are good, rich people are bad.

The Bible says everybody’s bad. It’s equal.

ONLY ONE IS GOOD

AND THAT IS

JESUS

FAVORITISM

REFERS TO

PEOPLE AND

RELATIONSHIPS

1 My brothers and sisters, believers in ourglorious Lord Jesus Christ must not showfavoritism.

JACOB is favorite of RebekkahESAU favorite of Isaac

JAMES 2:1

If you have favorites then you are ruining the lives of both.

PARTIALITY

IS YOUR OPINION

AND IDEAS OR

INCLINATIONS

OR ISSUES

2 Suppose a man comes into yourmeeting wearing a gold ring and fineclothes, and a poor man in filthy oldclothes also comes in.

JAMES 2:2

THE PROBLEM

WITH BOTH SIDES

IS PARTIALITY

15 “You must not act unjustly when deciding a case. Do not be partial to the poor or give preference to the rich; judge your neighbor fairly.

LEVITICUS 19:15

What he’s saying is this: Don’t show partiality to the rich and don’t show

partiality to the poor. Treat everyone fairly, rightly, justly.

THREE TRUTHS TO

CONSIDER IN

ELIMINATING

PARTIALITY

According to the

Bible, everyone is

equally made in

the image and

likeness of God.

So God created man in His own image; He created him in the image of God; He created them male and female.

GENESIS 1:27

Every person

is very

important

All people are equally fallen and sinful.

Bible says that all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.

ROMANS 3:23

So, people like you are no better than people unlike you. We’re all sinners.

We’re all fallen. And we’re equal.

Everyone is

also a

candidate for

salvation

Greatest equalizer of life is death.

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

ROMANS 6:23

Those who belong to Jesus are equally saved, equally loved, equally

forgiven. Horribly things happen when parents

start playing favorites. Don’t let your preferences become your

prejudices.

Horribly things happen when parentsstart playing favorites.

Don’t let your preferences become your prejudices.

CHRISTIANITY IS

THE ONLY RELIGION

OF EQUALITY

Biblical thinking that we’re equally made by God, we’re equally fallen into sin, and we’re equally loved, and saved, and forgiven by God, and that God’sa Father and he loves all of his kids

equal, and he doesn’t have favorites, and he doesn’t have

prejudices and preferences.

GOD’S

PRESCRIPTION FOR

PARTIALITY

God is a Father, who has no favorites.

HIS seat alone is the seat that matters, that you and I shouldn’t be

particularly concerned about our seat, even in this life. And we

shouldn’t be arguing that people like us should get a better seat.

WHO IS SITING IN

YOUR LIFE?

WHO IS

CONTROLLING

YOUR LIFE?

WHO’S

THE

KING?

James' commentary: JAMES 2:8-9 8 Indeed, if you keep the royal law

prescribed in the Scripture, Love your neighbor as yourself, you are doing well. 9 But if you show favoritism, you commit

sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors.
