What is…

WEB 2.0

“The Web we know now, which loads into a browser window in essentially static screenfulls, is only an embryo of the Web to come. The first glimmerings of Web 2.0 are beginning to appear, and we are just starting to see how that embryo might develop. The Web will be understood not as screenfulls of text and graphics but as a transport mechanism, the ether through which interactivity happens”

“What we need to remember, though, is that the Web as we know it now is a fleeting thing: Web 1.0. Its relationship to the Web we will be familiar with in years to come is roughly the relationship of Pong to The Matrix. The Web as we know it is essentially a prototype—a proof of concept.”

A well (over) used quote…

“Web 2.0 is the business revolution in the computer industry caused by the move to the internet as platform, and an attempt to understand the rules for success on that new platform. Chief among those rules is this: Build applications that harness network effects to get better the more people use them. (This is what I've elsewhere called ‘harnessing collective intelligence.’)”

Visit Site>Sign Up>Use

Web 2.0 made the internet easy to use and opened it to the masses. Most services are free, accessible, often mobile, pervasive, dynamic and engaging.

Most services started from a grass roots approach and have been shaped for and by the user.

Web 2.0 has developed “Social Media”. This media is one of connectedness, it is open, active, fast, and collaborative. It encourages collective authorship and users and authors to share, comment and develop each others work and spaces. It is mobile, pervasive and integrated.

But some would argue…

“instead of creating masterpieces, these millions and millions of exuberant monkeys, many with no more talent than our primate cousins are creating an endless digital forest of mediocrity”
