Fruits of Rarotonga

In July I went to Rarotonga on holiday. They grow different fruit to New Zealand. It was yummy.

This is a map of Rarotonga.

I’m eating brown coconut, it was hard and chewy.

There is also. Mandarin, lemon, pawpaw, passionfruit, mango, bananas and starfruit.

CoconutsThere are two types of coconuts. They grow on the same palm tree. They are green coconuts and brown coconuts.

The green coconuts are new coconuts and you drink the milk out of them. A green coconut has up to a litre of milk inside it. To get a green coconut you have to get a long stick to knock them down or climb up the palm to get them.

The brown coconut falls from the palm when they are ripe and you can eat the white insides. If you drink too much milk from a brown coconut you can get a tummy ache.

You need to take the outside husk off the coconut with a sharp spike.

MangoA mango tree grows big. I am pointing at some mangos way up in the tree. Here’s a close up of mangos in the tree.

Mangos grow October to December. This tree was growing out of season.

My friend Tavai has a tree house in his mango tree.

Lemons

This is a lemon tree. They are different from ours, they are round not oval and they eat them when they are green not yellow.

Bananas

Bananas grow in palms. They grow in huge bunches pointing upwards.

PawpawPawpaw trees grow fast. They are yummy. Here is a plantation of pawpaw trees.

Passionfruit

Passionfruit grow on vines. They are green and red when they are ripe, unlike ours which are black or dark purple.

StarfruitStarfruit are cool, when you cut them they look like a star.
