Understanding SharePoint 2010 search
- from a novice perspective
BASIC SEARCH CENTER(BSC) VS ENTERPRISE SEARCH CENTER (ESC)
BSC- Uses OSSSearchResults.aspx- Application page/not customizable/ leaves in
unsupported state (hives folders)- Cannot use full capabilities of SharePoint 2010 like:• Best Bets• Search Scopes• Crawled and Managed properties• Query Suggestion• Social Search
ENTERPRISE SEARCH CENTER (ESC)-MODEL 1
- Create as its own Site Collections (SC)
- Customize ESC and for each SC point to the new ESC.
- Site Setting- Site Collection Administration-Search Setting

- Under a Site Collection (SC)
• Use “Enterprise Wiki” template under “Publishing” tab, when creating Site Collection. (root template with all features)
• For sub sites, use any site templates

HOW TO SET UP CONTENT SOURCE?
– Go to Central Administration (CA) - Manage Service Applications - Search Service Application - Content Source
CREATE SCOPE
CUSTOMIZE SCOPE/SCOPE RULES
Point to ESC
Go Back to the Site Collection:−Site Actions−Site Settings−Site Collection Administration- Search Settings (Same as
slide 3)−Point to default search Results, Show Scopes Dropdown.
Change Default Search Scope:−Site Actions−Site Settings−Site Collection Administration- Search Scope−Click on Display Groups
−Click on Search Dropdown −Set the Default Scope to the "New Created Scope".
−Site Collection defaults to the “New Created Scope".
−ESC reflects the “New Created Scope".
CONCLUSION
Then… Set Crawled property as Managed propertyCustomize search result page to display managed property in populated results.
