Designing websites by user’s experienceBy Preeti Arora
Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works. Steve Jobs
To design an easy to use interface pay attention to what users do, not what they say. Self reported claims are unreliable, as are user speculations about future behavior… Jacob Nielson
It’s really hard to design products by focus groups. A lot of times people don’t know what they want until you show it to them.
Steve Jobs
The design of good house requires an understanding of construction materials and the behavior of real humans. Give users what they actually want, not what they say they want.
The ability to simplify means to eliminate the unnecessary so that necessary may speak….
Making simple complicated is common, making the complicated simple, awesomely simple, that’s creativity….
Clear content, simple navigation and answers to customer questions have the biggest impact on business value. Advanced technology matters much less.

Make your website more efficient, easier to learn and satisfying…

Components of usability
1. Learnability – How much user can learn from the first interaction with the product, how fast user can learn to use the product
2. Efficiency – The ease of use of the product for users to accomplish their tasks.
3. Memorability – How much an ordinary user can remember the usage of the product after using it.
4. Errors – how errors are managed, prevented and recovered from to minimize loss and user frustration.
5. Satisfaction – How positive and enjoyable was the experience of the user while using the product.
There are two types of usability metrics that can be captured during a usability test :
1. Performance data (what actually happened) 2. Preference data (what participants thought)
Benefits
Usable systems can save money by helping to
1. increase productivity and customer satisfaction 2. increase sales and revenues 3. reduce development time and costs and maintenance costs4. decrease training and support costs
User-Centered Design involves several methods, including:
1. Defining business and user goals and objectives 2. Gathering requirements 3. Evaluating design alternatives, building and testing prototypes4. Analyzing usability problems, testing a site with users, and
proposing solutions to problems
Eye tracking
Eye tracking is a useful tool for web design. It can show what areas of a page are grabbing a user’s attention and areas that are being ignored. Eye tracking is useful in showing how a user searches for information.
Copy writing is interface design.
User centered Design is simple and a combination of :
• Visual design• Interface design• Navigation design• Information design• Structure• Interactive design• Information Architecture• Scope• Functional Specs• Content • Strategy• User needs• Site objectives
Call to action
Call to action in web interfaces comes in the form of clickable buttons that when clicked, perform an action (e.g. "Buy this now!") or lead to a web page with additional information (e.g. "Learn more…") that asks the user to take action. Effective call to action buttons grab the user’s attention and entice them to click.
User Experience Design
Web Design
Is less about graphics and more about psychology.
User Interface design is
to create a design that is both usable, appealing, and can be implemented….
Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration.
