When a young child started working, they got sick within weeks. The cotton floating was usually a cause of what the workers called “Mills Fever”. The dust also was a cause of sickness.

Most of the buildings that they were working in were falling apart. The dust from the crumbling buildings caused inflammation in the lungs. They also caught bronchitis and byssinosis.
