In this presentation I will be looking at the roots of spoken word poetry in Toronto, and in Canada in general.

The key ethnographic issues I will discuss will include:

•The African griot* roots of dub and spoken word•Spoken word and rap, what’s the same?•Is spoken word poetry being appropriate•The slavery tradition and North American oral poetry•Spoken word and the oral tradition historically
