Mikayil Abdullayev was

born on 19th December in

1921 in Baku. He graduated in

1939 from the A.Azimzadeh Azerbaijan Art

School and later, in 1949,

graduated from the Moscow V. I.

Mikayil Abdullayev (1921-2002)

Composition created by him for the Nizami metro station interior design holds special place in his activity. The mosaics on the walls constitute spectacular examples of mosaic culture. Moreover, he is the author of the graphic design of ‘’Leyli and Mejnun” and “Koroglu” operas, and “Chitra” ballet by Niyazi.

Abdullayev was a very versatile artist. Another area where he enjoyed success was mural painting. His first major works of note in this field are the mosaics based on the poems of Nizami which he created between 1973 and 1979 for the underground hall of Baku’s Nizami metro station. 

However, he did not find it easy to design the mosaics. Although he had already illustrated Nizami’s epic Khamsa, the artist was nervous about conveying this philosophy successfully in the limited space of the mosaic panels
