When taking a picture Burton uses a variety of techniques to enhance the impact of his photos. However to describe his style, he often uses a shallow depth of field in combination with a black and white image to create a feeling of contrast that by nature isolates the subject in his photos.

ERA Currently working in the field Posts majority or his photojournalistic portfolios on his website http://www.andrewburtonphoto.com/ Like many photojournalists of todays generation, Burton uses a variety of

social media sites as a platform for his work. Social media sites also allow fans as well as potential employers to easily

communicate with Burton. Instagram Twitter

MOTIVATION/ETHICS/BIAS Burton uses his photography as a platform to raise awareness to social

justice issues that are currently effecting the American public. Here are some links of the related projects

His work is the byproduct of his overall drive to be a social activist. Due to the nature of the content that he photographs Burton can sometime

be bias by having an over emesis on the worst in a situation. However this is partly necessary because in order to draw attention from the general public there often time has to be some sort of shock value.

TECHNOLOGY Uses top of the line digital cameras. Alike many of the photojournalists

working in the field today, Burton tends to neglect some of the older techniques of image making from past generations of photographers.

In addition Burton relies on the speed of not only social media sites but the ability to switch between the different imaging options on digital cameras. Photo By: Lori Grunin

MY MAJOR For the past three and a half years I

have been studying to receive a degree in the field of Criminal Justice. Before being introduced to Andrew Burton I had not seen many photos that accurately depict inmate life. Most of the photos that I saw were stock photos of jail cells and prisoner line ups. After years of lectures and articles read I knew there had to be more to life behind bars then what was coming up on a common google search. Thanks to the work of Burton I now can now easily picture the hardships of inmate life.

VIEW POINTS The most astonishing work I believe that Burton has done is his portfolio on

Americas growing population of elderly inmates. http://www.andrewburtonphoto.com/Portfolio/The-Jailed-Elderly/1 By the nature of photojournalism it causes the photographer to put themselves in a

situation where they are on the outside looking in. When Burton decided to do his project on inmates, this propelled him into the most

rigidly defined “View Point” of his career. What made this photographic project different is the fact that he now was

depicting a group of individuals that have had there liberty revoked, whereas the majority of his other projects depict some aspect of civilian life.

Due to this “fish out of water” scenario it made it much harder for Burton connect to the inmates on a personal level, thus sacrificing a very important aspect of the photojournalistic process.
