My genreI have decided to choose Culture as my genre. I feel like it will be easier to find contents and have more to write about if I have different platforms. I have decided to focus on places, music, fashion and lifestyle. I will be able to expand and link my ideas together, meaning I can find more images to take, and make it easier for me to write about different aspects of Sunderland. I feel like Sunderland is underestimated, and actually does have a lot to offer regarding culture. Sunderland is actually running for the city of culture in 2021. This city has lots of music, fashion and lifestyle events, which I am going to include in my magazine/billboard and website. I have already got an idea on what fashion, music and lifestyle bits I am going to include, by doing research in my area and seeing what events I can get involved in.

I created this mood-board so that I could narrow down what areas I would focus on.

My target audience I have quite a varied target audience. I am trying to appeal to people around my own age, as well as the older generations. By doing this I make my target population quite large and complex. In order to keep this audience, I need to include content that will be enjoyed by all generations, I need to keep the classic history of Sunderland, as well as what is going on today. This will keep everyone's interests at mind rather than focusing on one age group. I want to appeal to both men and women in Sunderland including all age groups past the teenage years. Narrowing it down I would say from the age of 16 onwards. This enables me to use certain language and contents that will appeal to people over that age.

What style I am going for…

Fonts – Since looking at regional magazines in my area, I am gong for a classic look, but with a modern twist. The fonts I am looking at are quite fancy in style, but are easy to understand and read. It blends in really well with the style and layout I am going for. The boldness will represent todays generation, but the font will represent classic history.

Colour Scheme – I am still unsure on what colour scheme I am going for, but I want it to look very urban (as Sunderland is a city). The colours that I do have in mind are black, red and white. These are the colours of the Sunderland football club, and they basically just represent the City of Sunderland. I don’t want the colours to look too symbolized as that would be unoriginal, but I want them to incorporate how people see Sunderland in colours.

Images – For my main image, I want it to be very scenic. I want to advertise different places in Sunderland but I don’t want it to look too colourful or overpowering. To do this I will balance it out with different styles of images on fashion, music and events. I want to show what Sunderland has to offer.

What will I include in my magazine? I want to include contents that focus on places, fashion and music in Sunderland. To do this I will use my own photographs of landscapes, musicians and fashion/beauty. The main areas I do want to focus on are places and events. Looking at regional magazines in my area shows that there are lots of events and places in Sunderland, which I think will be easy to use for my magazine. I will also find it easier to access places such as the Penshaw monuments, the Alexandra bridge and family events throughout Sunderland. The style I am going for is a cross between classic and modern as this would appeal to people of all ages. I want my images to be quite bold, but have varied fonts and text to match the style.

While landscapes and events are dominating my magazine, still want to make is broad and include some fashion/beauty and music articles, I might include these in the contents page as well as a double page spread.

All of this together will show regionalism of Sunderland.

How will I make my magazine regional?First of all, the contents I am including will all me related to Sunderland (my region). I have researched and explored many regional magazines from my area, and I have got a brief idea on what to include and how I will make my design look regional. The images, text, design and contents will all be influenced by Sunderland. This will all make my designs look regional, as the images will be of the same place, and the the text will be slightly corresponded with my accent and dialect. As my genre is culture, it is easy to see that I can make it regional, just by the images and contents included. It will be of places I know in and around Sunderland, which will appeal to a regional target audience. I will also be mentioning places that only local people will know of, things such as events will be included, this is how it will be regional rather than national.

What is my inspiration? Most of my inspirations come from existing magazines in my area. This includes the VIBE magazine and the North East Life. The style of these magazines will fit in with the ideas I have for my own work. The contents I want to include mainly are inspired from Spark and VIBE magazine, but the sorts of design I am going for is a cross between those and The North East life. I want to make it look modern with a bit of history.

VIBE magazine is quite a well known magazine throughout Sunderland and is also a free magazine that informs you of upcoming events in Sunderland. This is a very useful magazine fro an audience who maybe have a family, or tourists. The layout of all these inspirations are bold yet simple. And want mine to look quite colourful but still going for the classic look.

Ancillary ideas For my ancillary task I have to create a front cover, contents page, double age spread, website and billboard. I want them all to correspond in some way so that they have some sort of a theme. I want to make them all look up to date, but still have that classic look. To do this I will have to use my inspirations and mix them up to create an outcome that I am happy with. I want to make them look professional, but still look regional. I want the colour scheme to be the same throughout, and maybe have the fonts similar on each piece.
