CHRISTMAS PARADES IN MEXICO
History of Christmas and Christianity in
Mexico
It is no secret that Christmas in Mexico is a truly unique and vibrant experience however most of the yuletide traditions in practice tell of a rich legacy that dates back to the times of the Aztec Indians
The widespread conversion to Christianity brought about the practice of celebrating Christian festivals like Christmas and Easter albeit with very distinct Mexican cultural characteristics
The Las Posadas which are a series of processions during the yuletide season finds its roots in the origin of Christmas in Mexico when the Spanish invaders spread the message of Christ through similar processions and converted the pagan Aztec to Christianity
Contemporary Las Posadas
The contemporary practice of Navidad or Christmas Carnival like parades is rampant all over Mexico, commencing from 16th December right up until Christmas Eve. Today’s Las Posadas are a mixture of traditional and modern elements. The enactment of Mary and Joseph searching for a place to give birth to Christ from one inn to the next is still very much a part of the traditional Las Posadas. Modern elements include singing, dancing and lighting fireworks
