Main Points of Vernallis Theory

• The rules of ‘continuity’ editing are broken in order to draw attention.

• Obvious edits are used and special effects such as slow motion are added to the video.

• Jump cuts are often used in the music video.• The use of base tracks is frequently used in

music videos• The camera will sometimes move in time with

the music.

Main Points of Goodwin Theory

• The traditional narrative analysis do not apply to pop videos.

• They are built around the song – Do not pose traditional narrative structures.

• Singer will often look directly into the camera, Breaking the 4th wall – this is an extension of performance and trying to involve the viewer at home with the performance.

• Pop video uses the singer as both the narrator and as the character.
