Evaluation Question 7:What do you feel you have learnt in the progression from creating the school magazine , to creating your music magazine?

Front Cover Progression

The image on the left hand side, “Student Times” , is my preliminary task and the one on the right my final music magazine. On evaluation after creating my preliminary task I found that there are various issues and errors with it that I would ensure I addressed in my music magazine. My preliminary task front cover looks empty as the positioning of the coverlines all left of the main image make the cover look unprofessional. Also the main image itself has major flaws such as the quality of the image and it does not have any singular main subject; it in fact has 4 giving the image no main focus. It is also clear that although I attempted to create a colour scheme and “house style” with the use of colour and fonts, that they are not eye catching and do not stand out enough against the image, as well as there being no variation in fonts.

Front Cover Progression: What I have learntI have first of all learnt the significance and importance of a good quality main image with a clear focus and direction. The main image sets the tone from the rest of the magazine and generally is the first thing that is eye catching to the potential audience.

To ensure that my main image was professional and appealing to my target audience I ensure that I used a professional quality camera to secure the highest quality image possible. I also decided that my main image would feature only one main focal point, one main artist so that it was eye catching and clear to the audience what the main story in the issue was about.Another vital piece of information I learnt from creating my

preliminary task is the use of colour within the front cover. Now of course it is clear that my music magazine does not feature a lot of colour but I have done this to compliment the conventions of my chosen genre and I have used one splash of red to ensure the coverline is eye catching and impactful. In comparison to my preliminary task which has no eye catching or appealing colour and comes across as uncreative and boring.

Contents Page Progression

My contents page for my preliminary task lacks overall detail. It has no story that links to the photo on my front cover or the photo on the contents page. Again the colour scheme is not eye catching. I included a link to social media although It does not stand out against the background photo. I was happy with the layout of my text and photos although I wanted to execute this better in my main magazine.

Contents Page Progression: What I have learntI realised from my preliminary task that including

an image that relates to my cover story is important and vital to ensure my contents page looks professional; the photo I have used features the artist included in my cover story, I have highlighted this by brining this story to the top of my contents page and separating it from the rest.I have continued the dark colour scheme for the background and main image with the white text standing out so that the text is eye catching and easy to read.

I once again have included a social media link but in contrast to my preliminary task I have ensured that it is easy to identify by placing it logically and ensuring the text stood out again the background. I have also included an icon from the social media site so that it is instantly identifiable.

I have included two additional items on my final magazine that I did not include in my preliminary task, these being a pull quote and a logo in the top right hand side. The pull quote serves to reinforce the cover story and to entice the reader to want to read the story.

Double Page Spread ProgressionThis is my double page spread for my final magazine; although I have nothing to compare it against I feel the experienced I gained from my preliminary task helped me when constructing my double page spread.
