About Faces and Places “I’ve been thinking about releasing my G3 work into an exhibition for a while now

but never really found a way which was interesting to me as an artist. I’ve been to so many exhibits in recent years and wanted a way to make this one feel personal. I felt the best way to do that was to make the visitors part of the exhibition.”

~Andre Pienaar G3

Faces and Places is the latest exhibition of Andre Pienaar G3 Camera Specialist.

An exhibition with a secret location, Faces and Places is an invite-only even with an interactive element: guests can print an image of their own portrait, which will be turned into an artistic collage at the opening show.

Aside from including the guests, Andre Pienaar has featured a selection of his best portrait work, examples of which can be seen in this presentation.

About Andre Pienaar G3 Camera Specialist

Andre Pienaar G3 Camera Specialist is unique in that he only uses a

Panasonic G3 Camera – a restriction which he says inspires him to new

levels of creativity.

A South African living in the beautiful capital city of London, Andre

Pienaar G3 graduated from Goldsmiths with a degree in Fine Art in the

year 2008.

Since then, he has been solely devoted to photography, finding the

beautiful and striking imagery he displays in everyday places and people.

Bashful (2014)

Bashful, says Andre Pienaar, was the result of a beautiful day out with a

beautiful person.

“I find it joyous that someone can be unaware of their perfection. Too often in portrait

photography the subject is acutely aware of their appearance to the photographer and end

viewer; but this photo was the result of a spontaneous photoshoot. The difference is clear.”

With its bright colours and sense of freedom, Bashful was the

unintentional product of a wintry day in the Yorkshire dales.

“I loved the chilly feel to the air, which gave the background this icy hue. Though there are

other colours than blue, I felt the whole photograph had been imbued with a sense of

wintry chill.”

Direct (2014)

Quite in contrast to its predecessor Bashful, Direct captures the

determination of a man who knows what he wants.

“I felt Diego (the subject of this photograph) had this disposition about

him, this sense of quiet determination. I wanted to capture that with

the camera, and create a reminder that being sure of yourself is

always a good thing.”

The black and white tones, with a hint of sepia, lend the photograph

a sense of iron resolve and clear cut ideas.

“I knew this photograph would have to be monochromatic – the

gravity of the subject demanded it.”

Pensive (2014)

Pensive (2014) Pensive is a photograph with many interpretations, according to the

photographer who took it.

“Does the subject’s face show surprise? Concern? Disdain? The viewer has to

decide. It’s a playful photograph in that sense.”

~ Andre Pienaar G3 Camera Specialist

Soft hues highlighted certain areas of the photograph that Andre Pienaar

wanted to point out ones that he particularly wanted viewers to notice.

“The subject is nearly part of the background – her skin tone, the colour of her

top all blending in. It’s merely her expression and beautiful dark hair that stand

out to the viewer, something I wanted to emphasise with the colour scheme.”

Sultry (2014)

Sultry (2014) Sultry takes conventional ideas about attractiveness and gender

stereotypes and turns it on its head.

“ The subject here had this fantastic gaze, which I knew had to be the focus of the image. The smoke was a spontaneous addition, which just made the photograph – suddenly his expression was that much more attractive, more intense. He’s both rugged and feminine in that way.”

~ Andre Pienaar G3 Camera Specialist

Judiciously using black and white again, Andre Pienaar knew he wanted the image to be stark and striking.

“I wanted this image to practically arrest viewers with its gaze. I felt that I needed a strong image to encourage further exploration within the exhibition.”

Suspicious (2014)

Suspicious (2014) Suspicious was the result of a chat with a friend about marriage and the trials

and tribulations it can have.

“I thought about a wife waiting for her husband, and her concerns about his

theoretical infidelity. I wanted to capture that moment where the look of distrust

passed across her face – just momentarily, but enough to be noted by the

experienced observer.”

~ Andre Pienaar G3 Camera Specialist

The bright colours were specifically chosen to highlight the subject’s internal

turmoil.

“The strong red hues, seen in the background and echoes in the subject’s hair

and lipstick, were deliberately selected to show that there is internal rage

there. I wanted this to be a powerful image, with an element of subtlety in

terms of expression.”
