  • Designing a performative, complex environment necessities thinking about a structure as a condition that generates and differentiates. - Ahim Menges

We were asked to design a dynamic and evolving space inspired by an experiment or phenomenon for one to five people. Material explorations

investigating elasticity, durability, opacity, shadow, smell and texture will be used for spatial propositions. The spaces might expand and contract,

move, float, open, close or evolve slowly. The approach would be addressing complexities of multi-functional adaptive spaces programmatically and

    architecturally.

    BRIEF

    FLEXIBLE ARCHITECTURE

Flexible architecture consists of buildings that are designed to respond easily to change throughout their lifetime. This form of design remains in use longer, fits its purpose better, accomodates users experience.

Mobility allows for quick change of space on a virtually instantenous basis, allowing for day-to-day reconfiguration.

Evolution describes a built-in capacity for long-term modification to the basic layout over a period of years.

Elasticity concerns the expansion or contraction of the habitable space.

  • EXPANDING SPACES

Most modern camper trailers use a number of devices to increase space once they have arrived at their location, such as rising roofs and push-out rooms. The simplest system is a roll-up awning that can extend from the side of the trailer to make a covered that forms an external 'living' room.

  • WEARABLE SPACES

FOLDING FABRIC STUDIESSuzuki applies the traditional tea ceremony into a packable, moveable room. It is almost a space the occupier can wears. It is a simple paper lantern that folds out of an aluminium carry-case. The translucent curtain creates an intimate room for one person.

  • TRANSFORMABLE SPACESMOVEABLE ROOF AND WALLS

    Top:Mobile Chapel, Hugo Dworzak

    Left:Starlight Theatre, Studio Gang Architects

    Bottom:Hoberman Arch, Chuck Hoberman

Mobile chapel is a mobile structure that can be moved to another location at any given time. Through folding up its walls on three sides, the chapel's interior expands to the outside allowing it to engage a larger crowd.

Open air or closed atmospheres can be controlled by opening walls or lifting ceiling.

Transformable architecture enables the viewer to be stationary and building to change. Walls disappear and reappear. A roof spirals open. The inside becomes outside. An object expands and envelops one.

    6

  • MOVABLE STRUCTURES

    Bottom:Crate House, Alex Wexier

    Top:Shugakuin Rikyu Imperial Villa, Kyoto

Movable elements has the capacity to change a space's function and character. The space becomes physically different also realizes its potential in a way that more conventional architecture cannot. Moving ceilings, sliding walls creates a space for the user for adaptability and flexibility for change.

Crate House contains all the objects we are accustomed to having around us in a comfotable house that allows user to move the house with them. Seeing them in a one shippable object allows one to question the true character of the modern home.

On the left indicates the traditional Japanese ideal of formal simplicity coupled with flexibility in use o space and integration with the external environment

    7

  • Ikea is known for their delivery of simple furniture that anyone can put together with help from a simple handbook which has clear illustrative drawings showing the sequence and all the parts of the object with annotations.

In the diagram on the right there is a simple base structure containing small parts of steel tubes combined with steel, a flatpacked paper lamp shade. Below explains a concept of flatpacked structure unfolding into a small space.

A space can be easily created out of cardboxes by folding in specific ways.

Ikea creates simply illustrated manuals in order to create furnitures that can be put by anyone who follows the instructions.

    1.

Cardboxes are simpl light structures that can be carried around.

One can fold cardboxes in desired way in order to create a space.

Carton houses can be used as a shelter for homeless people or animals which live on the streets.

Easily foldable carton houses do not take a lot of space on the street and is also practical in terms of making and carrying.

FABRIC TESTINGFLEXIBILITY AND STRETCHINGStretching fabric to see how it reacts and what kind of texture it is forming. Mapping out the pattern helps to see how it forms.

    1. As the fabric is pulled in 4 corners, the lines in between the corners are contracting towards the middle horizontally.

    2. When pulled from the middle, fabric stretches and the threads come closer to each other creating the density of the colour.

    3. Pulling from diagonal two corners allows the thread to move towards the middle.

4.Four corners closer to each other than the first test, allows thread to contract towards the middle horizontally and vertically.

    9

  • The density of the shadow increases as the fabric is pulled.

The space between the threads is pulled closer together as the fabric is pulled which shuts more of the light out.

With this model we explored how light and shadow penetrates through the thermal fabric when weight is put onto it.

  • TESTING FLEXIBILITY IN FABRIC

Exploring how the woven fabric would work with a light structure and looking at different flexibility properties fabric has in different directions.

The structure took inspiration from the tent principle with a flatpacked simple frame structure and the fabric easily hand folded.

    DIFFERENT WEAVING DIRECTION

Fabric and the structure combined gained strength when put together, pulled and bent.

  • TESTING TRESHOLDS INMOVEABLE STRUCTURE

    On the left:AA Project

Openings in moveable structure allows the user to change the atmosphere by creating thresholds.

Fabric can be pulled away to create openings. When pulled all the way to the end, the space becomes enclosed

The wires are moveable and adjustable due to the need of changing the atmosphere.

A person can create whatever atmosphere they would like to have in the space by pulling and pushing away the fabric that controls the openings.

    12

  • TESTING ELASTIC FABRICELASTICITY AND FILTERING LIGHTWe stretched stretchy fabric in a cube holder in order to see how light comes through and the shadows formed.

Drawing as a tool of designing is crucial for fashion designers.

Sewing is the second step in realising drawings in real life.

Ironing is the last stage before the fashion show. Fashion show is a celebration of the hard work and creation of the fashion designer.

  • HISTORY OF METAXOURGEIO

    CASE STUDY OF METAXOURGEIO1.

    - Reinforce the areas identity as a network of a village.- Setting building height at 6 stories max.- Encourage a diversity of mixed-use activity on the ground floor of the buildings.- Increase the density of green space by attending to vacant plots.- Encourage integration of immigrants.- Encourage economic growth by creating oppor-tunities for small enterprises.

The meteorite unit is a fragment of a Vernacular Athenian house. It takes shape as a metal construc-tion. It is organised by a metal canvas which is filled in with grid-like surfaces.. These are suspended on a metal frame which is made out of motifs serving as a visual filter.

    museum

The factory brought craftsmen, small businesses and working class into the area. Today buildings of the factory are turned into Athens Municipal Art Gallery.

After the closure of the factory, the area was settled with workers (immi-grants), small workshops opened and since then the area has productive activities and residential use.

The interventions revitalised the lost atmosphere of the old square so people can come to enjoy the festivals and other gatherings which take place in the open greenery of the squares.

This increased the number of bars and cafes at the area. Many theatres and art galleries started to open, the area attracted many people from Athens. Wealthier residents moved into the area and contributed to the rise of values in the residential market.

  • METAXOURGEIO RESIDENTSResidents of the area give wider information about Metaxourgio and the atmosphere of it.

Metaxourgeio used to be aristocratic area, like Kolonaki. Now we have a lot of foreigners.

There were many who told me 'you are crazy going to live in Metaxourgio all by yourself'. They considered it absolutely insane. You feel that there are people who know your whereabouts and they watch you, in a good sense.

    Her house

If you start defending yourself with rage and fury, expressing your anger uncontrollably arguing with everone, you feed them with what they want to hear. But if on the contrary you respond kindly and simply, like 'nice day', 'how are you' etc they will immediately behave themselves without any further involvement on your part.

The only thing that happens in our neighbourhood is stealing a bag and breaking into a house, just that.

You face racism, you may face many weird things. People think in a peculiar and strange way.

I'm trying to quit drugs and I'm on methadone for one and a half year. Before the guest house, I used to live out in the streets.

New artist residents are easy to spot from the new artwork appearing in the area.

The area has a multi-cultural fabric allowing the area to be multi-layered.

    poly - multikatoikia - dwelling

In Athens vertical limit of 45 degrees determines the height of the buildings.

A typical example of polykatoikia typology is taken from the site in or-

der to analyse each layer of it. Ground floor is usually

used for commercial shops, top floor is used as studios

by artists who live in the area and in between levels

    are residential.

ARTIST STUDIOSArtists live and work in the same space, they also display their work as exhibitions. Therefore, the space has to be spacious and big enough to accomodate all these needs.

Some artists use their living spaces as exhibiton places as well to avoid extra outcomes and practicality reasons.

If the studio is on the top floor, the artists ma use the rooftop as a exhibition place or to make art outdoors.

Artists prefer to live in old places because it is cheap, more local and there are many interesting incidents happening around.

Farming Kindergarden is a prototype for sustainable school design. On the roof,

children can learn how to grow their food. This is a solution to urbanisation that causes deprivation of green lands.

By this way, children will strenghten their relationship with nature.

The limited land cannot provide enough space for students to

exercise in, so the running track was put on the roof as a solu-tion. Students on the track are protected by surveillance cam-

eras that operate at all times.

Classrooms with skylights were associated with faster pace of learning.
