Market Research: Manchester radio stations

The information gathered from market research helps entrepreneurs make profitable business decisions. The key in the business to make it successful knows what the audience wants. The radio station needs to make sure it’s making profit they will do this by making sure they are playing music that’s popular at the moment and for example key 103 will play song of the charts and kerrang will play song from the rock and punk genre. Market research is also important because the company need to make sure there is a gap in the market there is no point if there’s no gap so research needs to be done.

Key 103-

Is a very famous and popular radio station in Manchester its plays all sorts of music genres but plays the top of the charts most of the time. The radio station is for all ages and all genders. So pop and dance loves will listen to key 103 including myself. Key 103 is my personal favourite radio station I don’t usually listen to the radio but when I do I will listen to key 103 this is because it plays the most recent popular music which is usually the genre of pop and dance. Key 103 is the market leader in greater Manchester with over 532,000 tuning in to the station each week.

This chart shows seven radio stations and the number of people who listen to the stations. Key 103 and capital Manchester is the most popular I believe this because these stations play all genres and offer music for any demographic (age/gender/class/culture)

The graph shows the break down of demographic, shows the type of person who lsiten to key 103, this shows the breakdown in age,gender and social class. A key 103 typical listeners porfile is C1-C2, (lower middle class/skilled worker) single, married and working full time.

Smooth radio-

Smooth radio is also a popular and well known radio station in greater Manchester, the radio plays music genres more aimed at the older generation/ adult. Smooth radio brings a “relaxing music mix” the song played are from the past five decades. Smooth radios audience is mostly adults so they couldn’t be able to play songs of the genre of dance or pop because adults will not like that genre so smooth need to make sure they plays of the adult generation will like. Smooth radio is the only radio station that aimed at the age limit of 40-59 age groups. People who love relaxing and good old great hits will tune in to this station. 4.6 million Adults tune into to smooth radio over UK. Smooth radio North West is the most popular station.

The radio station appeals to both male and female audience, but with a slight female majority 55% and male 45% not much different. Smooth reaches 4.6 million (9%) adults tune in. this data shows that smooth is for both genders.

Survey Monkey: Market Research:

I carried out market research and created a questionnaire about radio and sent it to a few people. These questions included Demographics, Geodemographic and Psychographics. 3 people answer my survey these are the responses.

The question was what stations you listen to; peoples who answer the survey, one said XFM and the other two said other, which was BBC radio. Other 66.6% and XFM 33.33%. If I asked more people the results would be detailed and I would have better results. The person who chose XFM was younger (teenager) and just wanted to listen to music, however the other two who answered my survey were in the age group 0f 40-50 so they wanted to listen to news and traffic alerts.

I asked the question what type of music genre do you like. It was an equal results all three people, pop, rock and alternative. 33.33% was the percentage of all these out of 100%.

Here is one example of a survey answered, it shows me this person listens to XFM and loves rock, Male and lives in the manchester area. He doesn’t really listen to radio that often but I think this is because his age because he is in the age group of 16-24 he might have a smart phone and listen to music on other types of software. If I was carrying out the survey again I would of sent the questionaire to more people.
