There are fades used in the video. The music video opens with a fade into Katy Perry’s shoes, the fades could represent the scenes being memories. there are shaky camera shots which could represent Perry’s emotional vunerableness and foreshadow her emotions. As Perry goes to sit down it is almost in slow motion, this could represent her emotional exhaustion.

lighting

The lighting used is soft which has connotes romanticism. Also, the warmish hue could show the time of the year so in this case, spring.

The flashbacks have the same warm colours although they are often brighter and more natural which could represent that she felt comfortable and happy with her previous relationship.

The first shot we see in the music video is of Katy Perry’s shoes on the floor. This already suggests that she is in a comfortable position at home. The opening of this music video is abstract as it shows no sign of narrative as of yet. The shoes set the scene of a bedroom which lets the audience know where the video is taking place.

This mid-shot is an example of voyeurism. This is because she is wearing a dressing gown, which is not a sight an someone would see in general. The camera is positioned in the door frame which suggests we are sneaking around seeing something we shouldn’t be.

The close up on the photo is another example of voyeurism. This is because the photo of Katy Perry’s deceased husband is personal and another thing the audience should not be viewing.

The distance the two are apart from each other on opposite sides of the bed shows that she is melancholic and connotes she is not interested in this new man.

This shot is referencing a shot taken from a film similar to what Katy Perry is trying to reinact called the notebook. This is intertextuality which is used to gain an audience from people the original film was targeted at.

This is shot demonstrates soft lighting and captures Perry’s expression on the left side of the frame. The soft lighting indicates intimacy and vulnerability because it appropriately connotes that she is thinking about something important to her. Furthermore, as we view her from the left side of the frame it makes the audience feel as though we are watching her experience something we shouldn’t be (voyeurism). If her position was centred in the middle of the frame, it would show aspects of a per formative music video because we would be able to fully see her expressions. Also, it would make the audience feel like we are meant to be watching, this shows less sensitivity towards the subject matter. The peachy colours in the background connotes

warmth and sunshine, from this we understand that video is supposedly filmed around summer time, as a glow effect is shown throughout the entire music video.

In this shot, the positioning of the couple is framed in the centre and the window frame looks as though its trapping them. This could perhaps connote that Perry feels trapped as its not a zoomed in shot, therefore making the pair looking smaller. The lighting on the male is very low so we are unable to see his express or full identity , whereas we are able to clearly see Perry’s distressed expression. Another example of voyeurism is present in this shot as we, the audience are seeing Perry’s character from outside a window. We also happen to capture her caught in her thoughts as she is not looking into the camera and looked pensive. Her hand on the window also indicates that she stuck in reality, perhaps looking to escape. The colours in this shot is a lot darker than the previous shot. We could infer that with this partner, she feels less happy because she misses her previous partner.
