Picnic On the Battlefield

Picnic On the BattlefieldBy Julian Richter

SummaryZapo, a civilian drafted into the war, is alone. His only company is the sounds of distant gunshots and bombs exploding. Zapo is afraid and hiding amongst the sandbags in a trench when his parents appear out of nowhere and ask him to join them for a picnic

Production ConceptMy production concept is Dream within a nightmareThroughout the play the main character Zapo, is in an unbelievable situation, having a picnic in the middle of a firefight with his parents and even a soldier on the opposing side of the war.The basis behind my concept is that Zapo hallucinates his parents and the proceeding events being there to escape from the loneliness and fear that comes with war.The theatre space will be a proscenium theatre.

Research ProcessTo research the setting of this play I looked at images of WWII and fashion from 1959 France as well as measurements for trenches and etc. I also researched dream sequences to pinpoint the feel I wanted for the dreamlike sequences.

Theatre ModelThe model is made in inch scale.

Costume design: Zapo & Zepo

Green and Grey uniforms respectively.Zapos will be dirty from hiding in the trenchesThey will have very similar uniforms as Zepo is a manifestation of Zapos self in the enemies shoes.

Costume Design Madame & Monsieur Tepan

Monsieur Tepan will wear a pristine suit or business casual clothing which Madame Tepan will be in a brightly colored sundressBoth costumes will stand out against the gritty, dirty war stage and will subtly lead into the transition into the dreamlike state.

Costume Design: Medics

The medics will wear uniforms similar to the ones worn by medics in WWIIThe medics appear in the play twice once during the picnic and once after everyone dies. The medics will wear different outfits for both of these scenes.

Lighting

The play will have two different lighting arrangements that will change at appropriate times during the play.Dark and low lighting during the war scenesBright and sunny colors during dream scenes.Beginning of play until parents arrive: low lightingMiddle of play until bomb drops: bright lightingBombs Dropping: lights completely fadeEnd of play: low lighting
