PROPOSAL FORMJOSEPH PATTISON

AS MEDIA COURSEWORK

DESCRIBE YOUR IDEA FOR THE BRIEF

I have decided to make my magazine about the music genre of Pop-Punk/Indie Rock. The magazine will include a Front Cover, Contents Page and Double Page Spread within. All will be decorated with my own original images all added by myself.

GENRE/ SUB GENRE

• I have taken inspiration from various other magazines such as Kerrang and NME since they write about the same genre which allows me to pull out lots of different ideas they use to then use in my own magazine. Kerrang is a good example as the layout is rather simple and allows lots of content to be displayed on a single page.

TARGET AUDIENCE

• My target audience that my music magazine will apply to is those that listen to Pop-punk and Rock and those who listen to artist who identify with the genre e.g. 1975 and Fallout Boy. The age range tends to be that of teens (14-21). The behaviour of said audience tends to be different to those of other genres by being more “hardcore” and “different” to a fan of other music e.g. Pop or Classic, that means my magazine must apply to there personality as does the music they listen to.

MAJOR CONVENTIONS

• I will use the following in my front cover and other pages. First it is essential that I will use a Dominant Image which will be the main focus point of the front cover alongside the Main Sell Line. The colours will take inspiration of those used by many pop-punk bands, an example being Light Blue and Pink often used by people such as Halsey and 1975. I will also be using separate sell lines of the cover independent from the main one which will appear next to the Mask Head.

CONVENTIONS

• I may not use a barcode on my front cover as it takes up space which can be used on other more important assets such as additional sell lines or a bigger dominant image, it can easily be relocated onto the back. I have also chosen not to use additional images due to the same reason plus due to the difficulties of obtaining original images I wont be able to have loads of them, I am prioritizing the Dominant image and other images in the content page and double page spread.

ORIGINAL IMAGES

I am planning on taking the Dominant image myself, maybe in a professional studio. My band will consist of two girls (most likely played by my friends). They will be wearing rather punk clothing and one will be holding a guitar to make them look more convincing, it will be a high level view with high key lighting and a medium close up shot. My double page spread will be based on 1975 and their UK tour, in December I will be going to see them live which will give me the chance to take some pictures of my own to use in the magazine.

POTENTIAL DIFFICULTIES

The only potential difficulties I might face is the problem of obtaining the original images in high quality especially those of 1975 in the live concert, it will be very hard to take the pictures in a densely packed arena.

Another issue would be that of my little to no experience of using Photoshop and other editing software when it comes to designing my magazine, this will mean I will have to get well acquainted with it in the coming months.
