Spray paint art involves spraying colors on to a piece of poster board or other kind of non-porous surface, usually to create cosmic or landscape art. It is a unique form of performance art that you may have seen on a street corner or tourist spot. Spray paint artists create different shapes by masking their artwork with household materials. In one painting they may use newspaper, plates, and sponges among other things. The stunning color and fine gradations of shading are achieved with the right materials and good can control.  There are many techniques for creating a spray painting. The first thing is to make sure that you have the right materials. It's important to know where you will be painting and have the correct setup for that environment. It's a good idea to make a checklist to make sure that you have all the materials you will need for your work before you begin. That way you won't have to stop in the middle to find something. If you stop at the wrong time, you may ruin the painting!

Let's start with the paint. There are different types of spray paints that you can use. Let's make a basic distinction between hardware store spray paint and artist quality paint. Hardware store paint tends to have more solvents and less pigment or color. Artist quality paint is almost pure pigment and almost no solvents. This kind of paint is usually used by graffiti artists and because of this, it is not shiny or glossy. To make it glossy, you can combine it with one glossy transparent color from the hardwares store. That way you get the best of both worlds. Each brand of spray paint has different uses and consistencies. Some are thick, some are sticky and slow to dry, some are thin but dry, some have rust preventing chemicals in them. Because of these differences, you need to know your brands quite well before you purchase. The only free resource with this information that I am aware of is www.spraypaintartsecrets.com

There, once you sign up for their mailing list, you can read about all the different brands and what they are good for. The page includes information on spray paint nozzles or caps and also about other materials you may be interested in. Some other materials that you will need are plates, bowls, a pallet knife, glossy magazine papers, newspapers, a respirator with organic vapor cartridges to protect your health, plastic grocery bags, sponges, and poster board paper to paint on. There are many more possible materials you can use to play with spray paint, but this list is a great place to start. I want to repeat the part about protecting your health, because that's really important. Your health is of infinite value. Please be sure to wear a protective mask with organic vapor cartridges to protect you from inhaling spray paint. Paint in an open area where there is plenty of breeze. If that isn't enough, use fans to blow the paint quickly away from your working area. I like to paint on top of a piece of wood placed on a table or the floor.

Now that you have your materials, the first step is to decide what you want to paint. I recommend starting with something very simple. A planet with the ocean in front of it is a simple starter painting. You can watch this video to learn how

There are many different spray painting techniques that you can play with. Before you start spraying, it's good to have a plan. What techniques are you going to use in this painting? What materials will you need to have handy? If you plan on creating land, you will need to think about the colors of paint that you will use to create layers. For example, if you want an orange mountain, you will need to apply your colors going light to dark. Start with yellow, then orange, then red, and above all these colors black. Then you can use a newpaper or magazine page to work with the layers of spray paint. Amazing effects happen this way!

Most people haven't noticed that the angle of the spray can is very important. If you spray the paint at a wide angle, the result will be more opaque. If you practice using the correct 45 degree angle, your painting will come our more bright and glossy.  Having the correct spray paint nozzle or cap is also very important. If your nozzle is too wide the spray may not be controllable. You will need the most narrow caps that you can find. Wide caps work well for graffiti, but spray paint art is quite different. This is just a little bit of the information that you will need to become a spray paint art street artist.
