Mesopotamia – Greek: Land between the rivers (Ancient West Asia)

Modern Day: Iraq, Iran and Syria.

Formed by the Tigris and Euphrates

Was a flat land but turned into a large oasis

Often called ‘fertile crescent’, and the settlers called it Sumer

3500 BC: Invention of wheel and plough

3000 BC: Cuneiform script developed in Mesopotamia (The oldest known writing in the world)

West Asian Languages: Sumerian, Akkadian, Elamite, Hittite, etc.

They spoke Semitic language.

In this era, life-size statues of kings were produced

Many of the artifacts were found in the royal cemetery at Ur

Where Sumerian kings and queens were buried in all the finery of their gold and jewelry, together with their attendants and courtiers

They were killed so that they would accompany them into the next world

Realistic head of a bull with human beard (presumably a ritual adornment)

Carved lapis lazuli and wood with gold leaf.

Lapis Lazuli: Blue Stone, imported from northern Afghanistan (2000 miles: 3200km)

Used for the bull’s horn tip, the hair between the horns, pupils and eyelids, and beard

The panel beneath has the strange little pictures of animals, impersonating human

Wood with shell inlay.

Depicting four scenes. The top of the panel is sometime called “Gilgamesh motifs”

The curious twisted pose, frontal above the waist but in profile below, was being used about the same time in Egypt.
