Daimler Trucks at a Glance.Edition IAA 2012.

In 2011 we once again gained the top position among global truck producers in terms of sales of medium-duty and heavy-duty trucks. Daimler Trucks is now well on the way to reaching its targets for 2012. However, an increase in sales and an operational profit that is at least on last year‘s level are only intermediate steps on the way to our goal: average target returns of eight percent throughout the business cycle.
After all, the debt crisis and the developments of recent months have made one thing clear: The truck business is still a cyclical one. We can therefore be proud of the fact that our Global Excellence strategy has significantly decreased our vulnerability to such ups and downs.
The global scope of our business and the products we have developed for specific markets have also contributed to this strength. A look at the most recent highlights illustrates this fact. Through our new Mercedes-Benz Actros we‘ve significantly raised the bar for long- distance freight transport. And through the Actros‘ „brother,“ the Antos, we are catching up in the short-distance delivery business. Fuso is offering the new Canter Eco Hybrid, the first hybrid truck in which this expensive technology pays off in terms of lower operating expenses. We are also forging ahead in the area of powertrains through our new platform for medium-duty engines. We are the first manu- facturer in North America to offer engines, axles, and powertrains from a single source under our Detroit brand. In the area of „green“ technologies, our North American model series have been certified as compliant with the strict GHG14 standard — one year before this standard becomes mandatory.
Our growth strategy in the new markets is also making good progress. We opened our BharatBenz production plant in India in April, and our joint venture with Foton in China has been in operation since the middle of this year.

Daimler AG is one of the world’s most successful automotive companies. With its divisions Mercedes-Benz Cars, Daimler Trucks, Mercedes-Benz Vans, Daimler Buses and Daimler Financial Services, the Daimler Group is one of the biggest producers of premium cars and the world’s biggest manufacturer of commercial vehicles with a global reach. Daimler Financial Services provides financing, leasing, fleet management, insur-ance and innovative mobility services.
The company’s founders, Gottlieb Daimler and Carl Benz, made history with the invention of the automobile in the year 1886. As a pioneer of automotive engineering, Daimler continues to shape the future of mobility today: The Group’s focus is on innovative and green tech- nologies as well as on safe and superior automobiles that appeal to and fascinate its customers. For many years now, Daimler has been investing continually in the development of alternative drive systems with the goal of making emission-free driving possible in the long term. So in addition to vehicles with hybrid drive, Daimler now has the broadest range of locally emission-free electric vehicles powered by batteries and fuel cells. This is just one example of how Daimler willingly accepts the challenge of meeting its responsibility towards society and the environment.
Daimler sells its vehicles and services in nearly all the countries of the world and has production facilities on five continents. Its current brand portfolio includes, in addition to the world’s most valuable premium automotive brand, Mercedes-Benz, the brands smart, Maybach, Freight- liner, Western Star, BharatBenz, Fuso, Setra and Thomas Built Buses. The company is listed on the stock exchanges of Frankfurt and Stutt-gart (stock exchange symbol DAI). In 2011, the Group sold 2.1 million vehicles and employed a workforce of more than 271,000 people; revenue totaled € 106.5 billion and EBIT amounted to € 8.8 billion.

Six strong vehicle brands are concentrated under the Daimler Trucks umbrella. All over the world, we offer customized applications and pioneering technologies in our products.
» TrucksEurope/LatinAmericaThe Mercedes-Benz brand is a synonym for first-class product and service quality, cost-effectiveness, reliability, and sustain-ability, as summed up by the slogan “Trucks you can trust.” Whether the vehicle required is for long-haul, distribution, or construction site operation, the Mercedes-Benz brand provides individual and reliable solutions in the medium and heavy-duty truck segment. For many decades now, the pioneering spirit at Mercedes-Benz Trucks has generated groundbreaking innovations – from alterna-tive drives to active and passive safety systems.
» TrucksNAFTAThe Freightliner trucks brand, the main pillar of the Daimler Trucks North America business unit, manufactures trucks in the Class 5 to 8 segment. These vehicles cover a broad range of application areas in the commercial vehicle segment. In line with the “Run Smart” slogan, the company puts its faith in innovation, technology, and customer-focused activities.
TheWesternStar brand offers premium-class heavy-duty trucks, primarily for use by owner-operators or small fleets. Western Star serves market niches such as special and construction site applica-tions as well as long-haul transport. With their striking exteriors and ideal suitability for off-road appli-cations, the vehicles are without a doubt “serious trucks for serious truckers.”
They’re a common sight on North American roads: the yellow school buses from ThomasBuiltBuses, which are built on Freightliner chassis. North America’s leading school bus manufacturer can look back on a long and distinguished history. In fact, Thomas Built Buses has been the embodiment of safety and top quality since 1916.
» TrucksAsiaThe Fuso brand has made a name for itself worldwide as a quality-conscious manufacturer. Nowadays its reputation extends well beyond Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. The vehicles developed and produ-ced by Fuso are not only of high quality, they are also cost-effective and tailored to the requirements of their application areas. As a result, customers can totally rely on them, day after day. Fuso offers extre-mely customer-focused and comprehensive spare parts and workshop services for its trucks and buses.
Today Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corporation (MFTBC) is an integral part of Daimler Trucks. It plays an important role as competence center for light-duty trucks and state-of-the-art hybrid technology.
» DaimlerIndiaCommercialVehiclesThe introduction of the BharatBenz brand strengthens Daimler Trucks’ involvement in India and serves as the basis for introducing a local generation of trucks. The new brand offers customers a com-prehensive product range in the weight classes from 6 to 49 tons, as well as solutions for various areas of application.

Global Excellence. on the customers’ needs. Our aim is to grow in terms of quality and quantity alike.
We intend to increase our market share in the triad as well as in Brazil. In this endeavor, our new Actros flagship truck is the most important truck project of the past decade. As part of our strategy for opening up new markets, we will offer customized products for the increasingly important “modern domestic trucks” segment in order to boost growth in these markets.
With the “Get to 8!” program, which addresses continual cost manage- ment and the consistent utilization of synergy potential, Daimler Trucks aims to achieve an eight percent return on sales across the entire business cycle, beginning in 2013. Our global modular system is growing and allows us to develop new products for traditional and new markets at manageable costs. As a result, these product genera-tions will have an unprecedented level of commonality.
FutureProductGenerationsandTechnologiesEnsuring that future product generations offer innovations and even more value for customers is the strategic goal of the fourth initiative within the Global Excellence program. Thereby, Daimler Trucks is strengthening its leadership position in the area of new technologies. The new Mercedes-Benz Actros truck was redeveloped from scratch and presented to the public in 2011. The truck already meets the Euro VI emissions standard. One of the areas Daimler focuses on is alternative drive systems. To this day, Daimler is the frontrunner in the development of hybrid drives – not only for buses, but for trucks as well. The Mercedes-Benz Atego BlueTec Hybrid has expanded Daimler Trucks’ product range with a hybrid truck for the European market. At the end of 2011, Fuso unveiled the heavy-duty truck Super Great Eco Hybrid in Japan, and the company will present the new gene- ration of the Fuso Canter Eco Hybrid for Europe as a highlight at this year’s IAA Commercial Vehicle Show. These activities – alongside those in the fields of natural gas and fuel cell drives – are combined in Daimler’s Shaping Future Transportation: CleanDrive Concepts initiative.
NewInitiativeThe initiative Daimler Trucks Number One (DT#1) is the next stage in our Global Excellence program. DT#1 defines improvements of a mag-nitude of € 1.6 billion until 2014, which will help to sustainably secure our profitability goals. The potential for improvement comes out of each business unit as well as out of the work packages spanning differ-ent business segments, which concentrate on initiatives for increases in sales and revenue and the utilization of synergies and economies of scale through platform and modular strategies. Daimler Trucks will expand its leading position in the global commercial vehicles industry with DT#1.
The Global Excellence program has noticeably shaped the strategic direction of Daimler Trucks since 2005. The program encompasses short, medium, and long-term goals. Global Excellence boosts efficiency and generates economies of scale, while also enabling Daimler Trucks to professionally address the distinct cycles of the commercial vehicle business.
The Global Excellence program encompasses four initiatives:Management of Market Cycles, Operational Excellence, Growth and Market Penetration, and Future Product Generations and Techno-logies.
ManagementofMarketCyclesThe first initiative – Management of Market Cycles – is designed to make Daimler Trucks less dependent on the cyclical developments that are typical of the sector. This will ensure the long-term profit-ability of the commercial vehicles division. Due to the specific commercial application of the vehicles and, in particular, the exhaust emission regulations and the life cycles of vehicle fleets, the com-mercial vehicle sector is impacted by strong external factors in the global economy.
OperationalExcellenceThe second initiative – Operational Excellence – concentrates on the rigorous reduction of material and fixed costs, the optimization and standardization of global processes, and the increased flexibility of production plants. The foundation here is a management system known as the TruckOperatingSystem(TOS), which is based on the principle of lean management. TOS is designed to be used not only in production but also in all specialized units and departments. Daimler Trucks is also intensifying its efforts to generate additional synergy effects and economies of scale by further networking individual units and pursuing a parts commonization strategy. With the realignment of its powertrain production operations, Daimler Trucks has taken a further step in the implementation of its Global Excellence Strategy.
GrowthandMarketPenetrationWe intend to further expand and strengthen Daimler Trucks’ global presence. This includes the penetration of markets with good growth opportunities, such as Russia, India, or China. We are employing dif-ferent market penetration strategies that are suited to the respective market situations. In markets where we are already active, we want to further strengthen our presence and focus even more intensely

Low-emission and zero-emission trucks, buses, and vans. Commercial vehicles that automatically engage the brakes when they approach obstacles. All-around service — from the purchase of the vehicle and its use to its subsequent disposal — to ensure minimal costs throughout the years of operation. For Daimler Trucks, all of these elements can be summed up as ShapingFutureTransportation. Under this caption, we bring together a wide range of technologies and services that make commercial vehicles more environmentally friendly, safer, and more economical.
Our aim is to be the driving force behind sustainable mobility. Daimler is promoting measures to drastically reduce the fuel consumption and emissions of commercial vehicles with its CleanDriveConcepts. This approach extends across all levels of technology — including combus-tion engines, natural gas and hybrid drives, fuel cell vehicles, as well as alternative fuels. It also applies to all vehicle segments — from light vans to heavy-duty trucks — and all of the Group’s brands around the world. More than 770,000 environmentally friendly commercial vehicles are already on the road with SCR technology worldwide; so are approximate-ly 22,000 vehicles with alternative drive systems. In this way Daimler Trucks is underscoring its leading position in environmentally friendly and sustainable transportation solutions. The new Mercedes-Benz Actros is the world’s first long-haulage truck to be systematically designed in line with the future Euro VI emissions standard. At the same time, we were able to achieve a significant reduction of fuel consump-tion in spite of the adoption of a sophisticated emission control system.A further milestone in the reduction of fuel consumption was reached in the second quarter of this year with the use of “Predictive Powertrain Control” in the new Mercedes-Benz Actros. This system has information about the topography of the road ahead, enabling it to control the engine so that fuel consumption is optimized. The system can reduce fuel con-sumption by an additional three percent. In parallel, Daimler Trucks is forging ahead with the development of hybrid technology. The new generation of the Fuso Canter Eco Hybrid, which was unveiled to the public at the Tokyo Motor Show in December 2011, represents a milestone. For the first time, it is possible to operate a hybrid truck in a way that is truly economical. As a result, the success story of the Canter Eco Hybrid is also set to continue outside Japan. September 2012 will mark the start of production of the new model in Tramagal (Portugal) as well as its European launch. The vehicle will be one of the highlights of this year’s IAA Commercial Vehicles show in Hanover.
As a pioneer in road safety, we are striving to make driving accident-free. For years now, all of the major safety system innovations have been invented by Daimler. Our SafeDriveConcepts are paving the way for the widespread and particularly safe use of commercial vehicles in road traffic. From trucks and buses to vans, our vehicles are the benchmarks for active and passive safety. For example, our Active Brake Assist and adaptive cruise control provide drivers of trucks and coaches with electronic support. The new Actros will be not only even more economical, but also even safer. It already has the reputation of being the world champion heavy-duty truck in terms of safety, and it is now consolidating this position with the next generation of the Active Brake Assist 3. This system, which is sometimes referred to as the Emergency Braking Assistant, can now also independently trigger emergency braking in front of stationary obstacles. This means the Actros can not only mitigate the effects of a rear-end collision, as was already the case, but can also — depending on the speed at which the truck is traveling — prevent such accidents altogether. It’s yet another milestone in the development of truck safety. Obviously the new safety systems are transferred to all of our vehicles as quickly as possible. No other manufacturer offers such a wide range of cars, trucks, buses, and vans. Thanks to this approach, our buses can be fitted with systems similar to those used in our trucks. Mercedes-Benz vans have a lot to gain here as well. They can take advantage not only of the safety technology used in commercial vehicles, but also of the systems used in cars, which are more closely related to vans in terms of size and handling.
The third component of Shaping Future Transportation consists of our ValueDriveConcepts, which provide individual customer utility. Com-mercial vehicles are designed to earn money while also cutting costs as much as possible. However, the purchase price of trucks, vans, and buses represents only a small part of their total cost, as the largest share is accounted for by operating expenses. That’s why Daimler offers a diverse range of customized services that address everything from the vehicle’s purchase and use to its subsequent disposal. This issue becomes particularly important in times of economic uncer-tainty. Mercedes-Benz, Daimler Trucks North America, and Fuso offer a comprehensive range of services in their respective areas, including a large number of pioneering services.

FusoandNissancooperateonlighttrucks. Fuso signs a memorandum of understanding with Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. in order to expand the range of light trucks it offers in its home market of Japan. According to the agreement, Fuso will deliver Canter light trucks (5 tons GVW) to Nissan for sale in Japan’s
commercial vehicle market. In return, Nissan will supply Mitsubishi Fuso with the Atlas F24 light truck (less than 5 tons GVW). The agreement between Fuso and Nissan is based on the strategic partnership between Daimler and the Renault-Nissan alliance.
» July 2012 Newproductsun-veiledforIAA. Around two and a half months before the start of the IAA International Motor Show in Hanover (Sept. 20-27, 2012), media representatives are given a preview of the new pro-ducts that Daimler will present at the world’s largest commer-cial vehicle exhibition. A total of 16 vehicles are presented, including two world premieres and two European debuts. The highlights in the truck product range, exhibited to the automo-tive journalists, are the Fuso Canter Eco Hybrid, the Antos heavy-duty delivery truck, and the Actros flagship vehicle.
NewActrosforshippingcompanies. The logistics firm Dachser has opted to purchase the new Actros as part of Merce-des-Benz CharterWay’s shipping company concept. In this antici-
patory business model, Charter-way and Mercedes-Benz Bank form strategic partnerships with shipping companies that work as subcontractors for Dachser. The shipping companies can then rent the new Actros, which was named “Truck of the Year 2012” and is equipped with cutting-edge technology.
TheAntosislaunchedwithex-tensivesafetyequipmentandEuroVI-compliantengines. In early July Daimler also presents the new Mercedes-Benz Antos to trade visitors as a real vehicle. The Antos is the first specialized vehicle series (18 t – 26 t GVW) for heavy-duty distribution trans-portation from a German manu-facturer. The new truck series’ design sets new benchmarks, as do the safety assistance systems (all of which can also be found in the Actros), and the broad range of three six-cylinder inline engi-nes, which have displacements of 7.7 liters, 10.7 liters, and 12.8 liters respectively and outputs ranging from 175 kW (238 hp) to 375 kW (510 hp).
China:Foton-Daimlerjointventurebeginsoperations. The joint venture of Daimler AG and the Chinese truck manufac-turer Foton begins operations in Beijing’s Huairou district with the first jointly produced truck. The vehicle is sold under the Auman nameplate, and the joint venture company Bejing Foton Daimler Automotive Co., Ltd. (BFDA) will manufacture all of the Auman brand’s trucks in the future. Daimler owns 50 percent of the joint venture’s capital stock and is also contributing its extensive technological expertise with diesel engines and exhaust gas systems.
TruckengineplantinChina.Bejing Foton Daimler Automotive (BFDA), a joint venture of Daim-ler and Foton, further intensifies the pace of the two companies’ joint activities by investing around € 135 million in a new engine plant at the company’s headquarters in Beijing’s Huai-rou district. Once the plant is finished in 2014, it will begin to produce Daimler OM 457 engi-nes for Auman brand trucks.
